Creating Tilable CordWrap

I am working on a high-poly knife and want wrap the handle with an interesting knot pattern like shown in the pictures.

I have a hard time de-constructing the tilable pattern since the back side is never shown.
My current train of thought is make curve with one tilable section. Duplicating and merging those sections. Then run an extrude on it.

Any tips on how to aproach this kind of shape, and deconstruct such patterns ?
