quite literally, the red dot is where I clicked and the poly is what was selected. This issue seems to appear and reappear at certain times. WTF is going on?

i never had this issue, but maybe switching your driver helps?

you say "at certain times" are those the same times, are you doing the same things before it occurs?

    maybe try a reset xform?

...is that the poly that Bonner is trying to select is being ignored and instead, Studio Max thinks that he/she wants the one of the polys that's "behind" the desired poly if we reckon "behind" as being stuff that is in a straight line of sight vis a vis the camera at instant that the selection is attempted.

This happens to me now and then as well not just with attempts to select polygons but also with lines.

I've always blown it off as some bug that had to do with the code in Max that deals with normals and stuff and worked around it.

That looks like a backface to me? imo if you keep selecting it by accident just turn on ignore backfacing.

ive found in these max special situations - simple exporting the model as an obj then reimporting into a new file can fix the situation --- equally putting a reset xform on there then collapsing the stack

When I used Max I had similar issues with the swift loop tool. There would be a set distance in which it would work. Get any closer and it'd stop seeing the edge. Go further and you couldn't accurately place the loop.

My suggestions are the near clipping plane and the possibility of another mesh within that one. My two cents, it's an odd problem to have.
