Looking for an indie robot game

Hey guys, this is killing me!
I remember a few years ago, maybe 2009 or 2010 (though, it could well be older), playing a little platformer game, where you play as (I think) a robot. Of course, it could be a guy in a sci-fi outfit or something, but I just don't know. I remember getting upgrades to my weapon, and I remember fighting some VERY tough bosses, but the specifics are almost entirely lost to me. I loved it at the time, though. It had super retro and pixelly graphics too. Kinda played like Megaman, in a way. I remember him having a big, squarish head, but my memory is so vague, it could be way off.
I mean, heck, it could even be by someone here. I just don't even know what to search for, since "Indie Robot Platformer" is turning up nothing.
So, any idea? I'm totally stumped and sleepless, trying to remember... I think, too, it was in Japanese.
