[MAX] Sudden issue with baked maps

I was just about to really get started on a new project, when I encountered this annoying problem. Until now, even since 'upgrading' to Max 2013, I've been baking out Normal and AO maps without any issues using Mental Ray. Ever since last night, no matter what settings I choose (even when using Scanline) my maps are full of noise.

I have no idea what exactly is causing this. I've been fiddling with settings, giving the HP meshes subtle Push modifiers, etc... Any help would be vastly appreciated. I have no idea if it's something really, really simple and basic that I'm somehow overlooking - this is the first time I've seen noise to this extent on a baked out normal map.

EDIT: Found a solution - use a different format. I was using compressed TGA.
