Personally I think the re-release for the wii-u breaks the style heavily.
You'd be surprised at how much innovation is born of limitation. With the Wii being a more powerful system, they are allowed to implement more that the Gamecube couldn't handle. But in doing so, they lose what the original so great.
Isn't it a matter of just updating assets though? I think this is why they chose this game to remake rather than aLttP or Majora's Mask etc. It's just a matter of going in and updating textures and assets.... just making them better. So all that cool tech stuff from this thread stays in there. I could be completely wrong though. I'm not sure
That's the thing about it. I feel they were already perfect. They could always add a few things here and there, but the core art direction is flawless. That's one reason Wind Waker is my favorite Zelda game.
Have you heard of A Hat in Time? It's a game on Steam Greenlight right now. They are implementing a Wind Waker style and it is looking pretty good right now. I'm really excited to see how far they take it.
I was studying the vertex masking on Link, and trying to think of what it could be. A theory that can be added to the pile could be for collision purposes. With all this talk of wind animation and IK handles, could it be possible that the vertex masking is used for keeping parts of the model from intersecting with itself? Visually, it looks like the parts that are red would not intersect with the parts in green during gameplay if this were the case.
I had been studying the vertex mask for a while now, and I think I may have another theory to add up to the list. With all this talk with IK handles and wind animation, I think the vertex mask could be for collision purposes. Maybe it's set that red should never clip with green and vice versa. That's my theory at least.
I'm sorry for bumping this thread, but does anyone have a mirror of the textures from the first post? I tried the link provided but I clicking on download simply redirects it, I think it's not up anymore
Hope no one minds a good necro, but the link on the front page for the Wind Waker textures does not work. Clicking anywhere on the page for download simply redirects to minus.com homepage, its getting really frustrating. I already tried "Save Link As" but that doesn't work either. Help?

Gotta read this through. Windwaker is one of my fav games of all time. The art style is just so unique
As for the IK feet, I don't know the first game to do that but Virtua Fighter 3 did it in 1996

Are you sure the sword is post processing and not just 6 scaled models of the same sword?
Also FYI IK'd feet is at least as old as Virtua Fighter 3 - 1996/97 Search for video showing them fighting on steps.
I recently saw that Adrian Courrèges has an amazing list of game tech analysis articles here:

I contacted him to maybe get my windwaker analysis added.
And in his response He pointed me to this little gem that I just had to share with people
