I don't even know where to begin. For a class, the teacher wants me to create the wire frame of a human hand using only splines.
Kinda like that, or the wire frame model they use for movies before they cover it with plaster. Any tips or advice to get me started? We did an example with a wedding ring box. We essentially made a rectangle converted it to editable spline, outlined it, copied it above the original, attached the 2 and applied a surface modifier. We aren't allowed to use that technique now.
I thought maybe I could trace a hand out, then just manually add the necessary rings, and joints where the knuckles would be. :poly122:

@Scruples I will diffidently try that out. Thanks for the suggestions guys! More is always welcome!
here is an example fo the topology I used. absolute nightmare.
I will try and post the hand tonight, not sure if i still have the files

but anyways, does it have to be a functional cage or something like the boot you just showed?
if it needs to be funktional and you can cheat, i would say model it with polies, subdivide and extract shapes from the edgeloops
So yeah, you can do a lot of complex spline building simply using polygons first then converting the edges you want to splines as mentioned above.
However, if the spline network is supposed to be surface-modifier friendly to actually create shaded hand from there .... then I guess this teacher is just trolling hehe
I love the idea of forcing student to learn shape flow with splines tho.
@pior You know, I completely forgot about the trouble the surface modifier will bring I can't
think of any other way to model a hand without tracing and extruding up.
Edit: So basically, he traced out a finger, than made a copy and rotated it 90 degrees, and added the the line segments in between to make essentially a cylinder. with a rounder tip. I guess that works but I wouldnt agree that it is the most efficient way of making a hand. Thanks for the sugggestions.
