upcoming Jobinterview - i have a question

Hey there,

just received a interview invitation as 3d artist. They asked me to bring my reference materials to this appointment, but i'm not sure what exactly they mean.
They obviously saw pictures of my work on my portfolio page, so i guess i don't need to bring those images.

Do they want to see the project files like *.obj and *.psd? And in that case, should i bring my own Notebook or just save them on a usb stick? Or is a tablet enough, but i can't run CryEngine on that =/
Or am i completely wrong, and they want to see something entirely different?

Didn't want to call them first, coz i don't want to look unprofessional.

Thanks for your help!

I think they probably just mean a version of your folio images (on a USB stick will do fine usually, print 'em out if you like but only if you can get good prints) and perhaps a print-out (or two) of your CV.

It'll likely just be so they can have stuff there to go over and ask questions about in your interview.

Yep. Makes a good impression if you turn up with something to actually show. Sometimes they might be interviewing a few people a week and won't remember all your work off the top of their head or have time to go through it again (or at all) before the interview.

laptop or USB stick is best.

Reference materials... odd. If I were to do this I'd show up and tell them to open google images.

They prossibly mean your texture sheets. Or it could mean the concept images you used to create whatever your 3d work is. If you did use any.

It can't hurt to send them an email and ask what they mean though. It won't reflect badly on you. Asking question before an interview is better than bringing the wrong stuff along.

But yeah. Put absolutely everything you can on a USB as well. Make sure its all in formats they can open without specialist software as well.

are you sure they didn't mean character references? - phone numbers of people they can call to check if you're ok to work with?

Could just be clueless HR talk saying "reference" images as a reference to your portfolio? Therefore meaning just portfolio images?

Probably best to just ask what they mean.

thanks everyone for your answers so far.

i think the best would be to call them and clarify that question and bring that stuff on a USB and notebook with me.

    @sprunghung
i have no professional working experience and that also says my CV.

    EDIT:
they really meant my portfolio work. Prints or on a USB are fine. Thanks again for your answers and taking my nervousness ;)

You could always record a video or put together a showreel alongside your printed material? I'd imagine a lot of the nicer parts to 3D art could be left out when flattened down to a printed image.

Good luck with the interview! :)

I always take a copy on a external hard drive of everything they have seen, and any other quality work that they might want to see. Including my art test, if i did any. Printed Resumes. You never know... people might want to just take a look on a pc at your work right away. Having all that in your website is useful as well. But being over prepared is not a bad thing.

You could always bring everything on a usb stick. Just make sure it's all organized and easy to navigate:

    References
    Portfolio Images
    Project Files

That way you can't forget anything!
