Maya to max - splines/curves

In max I cloud model very complex shapes with splines. Things like gears, ornaments, and box with cylindrical hole inside. Is there simple way to do it in Maya ?

Yes, here's the
basics
on using curves to make surfaces. Output from the curves can be set to polygons instead of nurbs.
