How much should i charge for a project?

I found a small freelance project that involves a little bit of animation and mostly modelling. It's technical equipment animation presentation. I worked as a modeler for 2+ years before, but this is my first freelance project. i was wondering how much i should charge for it. Should i charge by hour, or if it is total sum, then how much should it be?

It's a hard thing to recommend, being that there are so many variables, most of which are based on your personal circumstance. But at the end of the day keep in mind you need to survive & pay the bills.

There's a lot of things you need to consider. The easiest way I found to start, was working out how much it costs you per day to live. So, how much rent are you paying each day. How much does your breakfast cost, your lunch and your dinner. Then move onto how much electricity you spend (and how much it will cost you for that day, on average), etc etc.

See where I'm going with this? It might sound a tad silly at first, but this is a great place to start.

At present, I'm living in Sydney Australia, and it costs me roughly $200 a day to live (that's everything, rent, food, and bills). Then I add on how much it would cost me to maintain my own equipment, software and time. Plus a little extra so I have savings, pay my own taxes, and retirement. I think I come in at needing to charge between $250-$300 per day, just to break even and not leave myself homeless.

Lots to think about! - just make sure you're smart about it. If you need any more help trying to work it out, give us some more details, and I'll try and help out ^_^
