I am working on a project, on which I need to make my weapon look as if it has taken some real beating. My intent is to add scratches and bruises to my weapon. I have finished creating my color map and normal map for my weapon. I did try creating cuts and scratches on normal and color maps, but it did not give me satisfying results.
I have used 3ds max for modeling, photoshop and gimp for texturing my weapon. Now I need to know exactly what to do to get the results that I aim for.
I am not using zbrush as I have no idea of how to use it.

Also, Gloss/Roughness and Spec will do wonders.
@Jack: Must I convert my diffuse map into normal map after I add scratches? Because it is almost impossible for me to do the same two strokes with brushes.
Just the same texture applied on both normal and diffuse map.
Now how do I increase the depth of the same scratches?
@Alex: I am a noob and I am still learning what to do.
