Two seemingly identical setups, two different Mentalray renders?

I have been using 3ds Max 2012 student edition 64 bit at University and at home. These are two renders with exactly the same setup but one has much better results.
You can see the first attachment (rendered on my home computer) is a much poorer render than the second one which was rendered at University. I no longer have access to the University computers but I made absolutely sure all the render setting were identical on my home computer to get the same nice results.
Could any render buffs point out what settings I could have done wrong? I emailed my Universities technicians and they suggested I "check my settings", which wasn't particularly helpful.
For all sakes and purposes I have a stock install of 3DS Max and I'm unaware as to any plugins the uni might have used.

Under Customize->Preferences->Gamma and LUT you can change that.

Did you use an HDRI in one, which could not be found on the other one?
