Maya Subsurface Scattering problems

Hello and thank you for checking out my thread. I'm working on a horror scene that I put on the back burner for too long.

Example 1:
This is just a rough render of my scene currently, as you can see the SSS is working correctly on my lamp shade, but for some reason, when using the same material making method and putting it on this window curtain, it renders out completely black.

I'm thinking it's either the light outside the window, or the mesh of the curtain itself. I just can't for the life of me figure it out. I included a pic with wireframe of the curtain, and you can notice that it DOES have intersecting geometry. This is the best result out of a NCloth sim I could get, is it a problem with normals?

The light behind the window SHOULD be working properly if it's casting all the shadows of the wood planks and whatnot. I am using raytrace shadows with everything.

Any sigguestions? I'm weighing heavily on it being a problem with the mesh but it's dificult finding a good method at modeling these damn things without the GEO intersecting and still having a thickness.

Any input you guys could give would be great. Thank you.
