Aspiring Creator in need of assistance

Hello everyone. I am ShinotoKnightZ, a new user in these forms who wants to make a small indie game that uses low polygons, high detail, and can run flawlessly on computers with netbook specs.

Sadly, I feel that my artistic style has gone out the window. The last time I actually used Maya was over 4 years ago!

Here are my current works:
(I'm not sure how to check polycount... Sorry for being a nub >.<)

My first creation here is a simple sword.

I did very well in my opinion with this, but I need to map UVs and paint it with a more cartoon-ish style.

My current work was this Sample Female.

I just recently applied UVs to her, however I felt it looked very ugly, and I stopped overall. Perhaps I'm not placing the UVs in the right places...

In conclusion, I am asking for any experienced users for help in this subject. It's taken me a while to re-learn the basics, and I am trying to improve.

For polycount you actually have it posted up in your viewport. That display on the top left shows you the polycount for everything in your scene, and if you select something it shows the count for the selected object in the second row.

As for the uvs, it would help out if you posted them. The girl looks like she has a seam on the side of her face, but since she has a boxish face and hair you should be able to move that to the back of the head no problem.

If you are worried about artistic style, I would recommend grabbing as much concept and reference as you can. If you have something that looks like what you want, its a lot easier to work off that than start from scratch.

    Good luck, keep on posting!
