3DS Max Help - UVW Unwrap Issue

Hello!

I'm new to 3DS Max and these forums, so be easy on me. I've been working on a model for a little bit and I've started working on unwrapping it. Well, I've run into an issue and I've looked everywhere, but can't find a solution. I've been using "Unwrap UVW" and that was going fine, but when I started using "Rescale Elements" I ran into an issue. See the images below for further explanation:

You can see here I have part of the model unwrapped and I'm wanting to use the "rescale elements" feature so that all my .. faces? are the same size, or same resolution when I apply a texture.

But, this happens. It removes some of the unwrapped parts. I thought at first it was just placing them on top of the other, but that's not the case.

Anywho, hope this is an easy fix. Any and all help would be much appreciated. Feel free to ask for more pictures or elaboration. Thanks!

The mesh was probably scaled in object space at some point.
A quick way to check for this is to select your object, select the scale tool, right click the scale button to bring up the Transform Type-in and check to see if everything is set to 100. If it's not, that's probably your issue and it means it was scaled in object space at one point.

To fix it collapse your stack, go to the command panel, click on the hierarchy tab (three boxes linked to a big box) and then go down to reset and click transform and scale. Then reapply UVW unwrap and rescale elements and it should work.

Oh alright, thanks for the help! I'll try that out.

Hm. I tried out what you suggested, Mark, and I'm having the same issue. I appreciate the help, though.

Try using the Reset X-Form modifier.

Select your mesh, click on the Utilities tab (Hammer icon),
click the "Reset XForm" button, click "Reset selected".
now collapse your modifier stack and start UVing again.

You should do this with all meshes before you start to UV things or
in general if you transform things in object space.

Edit: Don't use the XForm modifier in the modifier list! I have read somewhere that the algorithm (or whatever) is different to the function mentioned above.

Thanks for replying. I tried what you suggested and wasn't able to resolve my issue, but I'll keep at it. I may just have to manually re-size them.

There is one thing left that I can think of.
Create a new box, snap it to your building's position (or don't it only matters to get the object pivot in the same place which probably doesn't matter and can be changed later)
Apply edit poly to the box, attach your building, collapse and try it again.

Also the reset xform utility can be a bit problematic and the one thing that it does (reset the transform matrix) is what I explained how to do previously without all of the other stuff that the reset xform utility does, like reorient the objects pivot. Sometimes the pivot point doesn't matter or is already facing Z up and won't change, other times its disastrous...
