Fantasy realm Batman

Hey Folks. Getting stoked to go see The Dark Knight Rises. Had an idea to design a variation of Batman from out of a fantasy universe.. Here are some ideas so far. Drawings are mega rough.. just wanted to get the ideas out quickly.. Will paint up a final render, then take to 3D.. just want to be sure to get in all details I want first. Cheers.. Crits and suggestions welcome.

My fav is the 2nd. you might want to consider the batmans character a little more.

Even though he is the "Dark Knight" (speaks for #1 and #2) he acts very much like an assassin (#5) but in the comics he is also depicted as a detective. think about how you could put that in maybe?

ps. no matter what PLEASE dont do #4 or #5. so not batman :P

Cool start, I like 3 and 4 the best. Theres already some pseudo fantasy Batman variants out there that you could check out for ref, the first one that comes to mind is the Suit of Sorrows

In addition to that, you could also look at Batman from the unfortunate Grant Morrison story arc "Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne". Has a bunch of different versions of Batman ranging from caveman to witch hunter. They may not be fantasy variants, but it might give you some more ideas to see how the artist on the title handled the designs for each time period.

I dig paladin batman but the farthest right one makes most sense from a character point of view. Though he is called the dark knight, he is much more of a ninja! Regardless of which you choose, I think it'd be awesome. I really like all of the sketches, and I look forward to whatever comes out of this!

Hey man cool idea. I really dig both the Dark Paladin and the Gladiator versions.

However if you wanted to spice it up a bit I would like to suggest a Batman variation that is less bulky "HERO" and more rich genius Bruce Wayne. I have no idea how you could attack that but it might offer enough "something" to help set it apart from all the other Batman's out there.

I am really keen to see which way you go, but however you slice it I am sure it is gonna kick ass.

Hey everybody. thanks for the kind words and suggestions.. here's a quick update to the Dark Knight.. I decided to go with a combination of the DK and the Thief archetypes.. using a balance of metals and leather, built for flexibility and maneuverability, with dampening agents to keep the clanky metal noises down.. I still need to push some areas more to reduce some of the bulkiness and keep his armor light.. but it's been a fun adventure looking up various armor ref

Texelion!! totally take on the Joker Anybody else who would want in on this should do any of the other characters as well.. we could have a collaboration line-up . Robin, Bane, Killer Crock, Penguin, Catwoman.. Riddler.. any of them could be up for grabs.. could be fun

Nice looking concept although i think you are missing the point of batman, batman is supposed to use the darkness,take advantage of the shadows and use the element of surprise of his enemies.

Shiny,clunky and noisy plate armor goes contrary to that...I would personally go the path of the main character from assasins creed at least in terms of clothing materials...

If it was me if go with dark cloths,leathers and dark metals,light and loose clothing so batman could blend into the night.

I could see his cowl being a hooded cloak with a shape similar to batmans cowls shape and perhaps a masquerade mask for the face.

I love the new concept you got brewing and as far as doing villains I would love to see your take on Killer Croc and Penguin. Keep up the work. I'll be watching.

Lookin' pretty cool so far, though he feels bottom heavy and slow right now. Agreed with JO420 that there are some other angles you can attack this from that may prove more successful.

Hey all. Finally got back around to working on my guy. Thanks for all the great comments and suggestions. I am about ready to roll on the 3D now. I haven't added pouches and other weapons just yet, but they're in the works. I plan for a crossbow used for grappling hooks, a whip, and then, of course, pouches for flash powder and throwing darts... here's the update

Great job on the concept, my only crit is that the legs look too long judging by the placement of his crotch. I would bring it down some. Looking forward to seeing more!

I agree a bit with JO420 the concept seems a bit out of touch with the concept of the movie and comic, but any route you take may do justice as long as their is meaning behind the post. I think the leather and the rest of the armor seems a bit from the paleolithic times with the heavy duty armor. He may be able to stop a bullet though with that costume. Maybe make it a little bit thinner and fit his form similar to how the concept was in the new film. That would prove to make batman a little more sleek as well as swift to do justice, what he aims for.

Yeah, and the head is ridiculously small. Also, this helmet with the eyez make him looks dumb ^^. I think you should rework the head.

I've been knit picking at my drawing some more.. cleaning it up.. getting more contrast in there.. taking off some armor weight.. I'm still going to stick with the helmet tho, but yall were right in saying the proportions were off a bit.. I think I've balanced it all out a lot better now.. here's the update.. 3D's coming soon, I swear....

Assuming you are going for realism then his waste and mid abdomen is way to skinny. Males, especially muscular ones, do not have as much pinching in below the rib cage as females do.

yeah there will be a lot of things to fix.. I used photo ref for the figure I have so far.. I'm going for a taller build.. like 6 foot ish, with the build of a boxer or MMA fighter

Liking that concept! that anatomy doesnt look very natural especially the face and the abs, Im not sure what you are aiming for but if its real life anatomy rather than comic hero anatomy heres christian bale with his shirt off

How about Clark Bartram? His physique is closest to your concept.


I like the scallops in the theme, but I think the two bats on the front are excessive. The shapes are too similar to be so close to each other, and directly lined up. If you aren't planning to differentiate them with textures/materials, I think maybe you should move or get rid of one.

Looks good, but I agree with Tiger. Plus, I think that Batman always has the bat symbol on his chest, like almost all super heroes ( exept women because they must have a cleavage ^^ ).

Also, I don't really understand the purpose of the belts on the chest. Looks like a kind of holster ?

Cool TigerGD-- noted, and I will play around with those shapes a bit more then and see if the Bat symbol on his chest will look better.

Texelion-- good call, and yes, exactly-- I have yet to design pouches, but the belt will be used as a holster for his grapple crossbow and pouches for darts and flash powder

tricky design solution I look forward to seeing what you come up with. I have been thinking about it maybe leather embossing or I guess the detail work of leather. Is what you might look into, for a big batman symbol on the chest and maybe downplay (scale down) the straps.

Definitely moving in a better direction, i like the new concept much better.

One thing that would also look good and make sense with the design is adding spurs to his boots,if it is a fantasy universe Batman would surely travel on a horse and would need the spurs to get his horse to move forwards. Could be cool if the spurs had a bat wing design motif..

Cool design! Would like to see the whole character/armour fully blocked out though. Looks like you're moving to refine the chest piece too early. Some of them details might need some more chunkiness for better baking, if you're after a lowpoly that is.
