Hello all! I'm a young woman currently taking the animation program at the Art Institute of Vancouver.Part of our course is learning how to model 3D objects in Maya as after all, most animation is done in 3D these days. To this end, one of our courses (imaginatively known as CCM261) is requiring that we seek professional critique on our work. I am hoping that you people can assist me. More specifically, I am hoping to get critiques on the following 3D model that I've made. This is supposed to be a beach-side fortress. My main goals in this assignment is to create a nice, convincing 3D environment complete with textures.
Again, any critiques will be appreciated! Thank you all in advance!
Dont be afraid to add some geometry to your hard edges to break up those hard lines. Your walls and cannon bases are very straight and hard lined. Rock walls can have some great silhouettes if you break it up.
Also, in the 3rd picture, on the side of the wall, where it dips down for the cannon, you have some stretching in your texture. Watch that.
1 last thing. Your thread title is kind of a throw off. Generally if you put animator in the thread title, it's because you are posting animations. Next thread you start, really think about what the thread is about. It will catch more eyes, as a lot of people around here aren't into animation.
Thank you all. This was my first modelled environment I have ever done. I really appreciate all the critique you have provided me with and will most certainly make changes to it!
Hello, nanaelh! I see that you are on this forum as well getting critiques!
From what I can see, I will echo what others have said here: the biggest issue is the shadows. On the very first picture, it looks like that the tree is floating as there is no shadow connecting it to the ground that it's on.
On the fourth image, the fortress wall seems a bit too shiny considering the material it's supposed to be made of. The texture's shine gives it a "wall paper" feeling that takes away from the believability of the texture.
But overall, for a first effort on modeling, this is fairly solid and I love some of the little details thrown in (like the cannons and pile of cannon balls and flame effect on the third image).
I'm sure over time, your skills will only develop and sharpen. Good luck!
