Projecting Details In Zbrush, Please Help

Alright so I'm having issues with retopping in Zbrush, well I guess more problems with projection than anything else. I have a model that has separate subtools embedded into the main body of the model. When I try and retop over the entire thing and project the details onto the lower subdivision I run into the following problems.

If I leave my retop where it is (as seen in the first two images) the mesh details get cut out and I am left with very weird geo.

If I go in and move my lowpoly mesh around and fully envelop the original high poly model, the projection comes out fine (as seen in the second two images)

I had been following along with a very awesome Eat3D tutorial on character creation, and when he went to project the details of the high poly to the low, his high poly was intersecting in places all over the low poly,as mine was, and he had no problems at all.

So am I doing something wrong with my settings? Does it have something to do with them being separate subtools? I really feel if I was to retop the entire object and try and move my lowpoly around that this would just be the wrong workflow.

These are the settings I am using as well as a pic of the tutorial I was following with his intersecting meshes.

Have you tried adjusting the projection shell, or adding a slight inflation deform to the mesh before projecting?

If the green and pink areas are different subtools that intersecting each other, then it's possible that the low poly verts (which appear to be clipping inside the face) would be closer to the pink faces hidden under the green, and so it's using those for the projection instead. If that's the case, even pulling out just those specific verts on the low poly instead of the whole thing could result in an improvement.

Not sure if you do it this way but a good way to reproject is first subdivide your mesh once and then click the project all button and then do this for each subdivision level until you reach a satisfactory level of detail. This should solve most projection issues. I mean do this opposed to subdividing to say level 6 and projecting from there.

    Hope this helps!

awesome, yeah I adjusted the projection shell and formed my low poly a little better around my high poly and got some pretty good results.

I was totally first projecting on like the 5th subdivision level lol but I have been projecting on each level now and it turns out much better.

thanks for all the help guys :D
