All right now that Source Filmmaker is public access for everyone let's make a thread where we can share our work, troubleshoot, share tips and tricks, and generally have fun with this cool piece of software.
I animated the muzzle flash by using the particle system when I could have just play as the soldier n record myself shooting and then turn the pelvic bone to the side but meh. I learned a great deal nonetheless.
Ohhh very neat. I tried getting particles to work for the poster I rendered out with the Pyro, just some fire in the background and coming out of the building, but when I tried to import or create a particle system they just didn't show up. How did you go about making yours?
SFM is an awesome tool! I'm going to waste many hours with it in the future. My first take is very short and simple, I'm most happy with the spy as I animated him, animation is very different from Maya/Max but you kind of get the hang of it after a while. (lipsync was generated and modified) There is some overlay animation on the scout too but it's subtle stuff. Whenever I get the time I would love to play some with rendering and particles like you guys.
Please don't take this the wrong way, because I'm not wanting to change the topic at all. But I can't help but notice that game engine/movie maker is something that blender has been able to do for years. And it's been freely available to the public forever. Now I know Blender's UI might cause some people's heads to explode so I suppose Valve has found a nice niche.:poly142:
So I still think it's pretty cool. Anyways this release is another reason why I never buy from Origin, always Steam. Don't bite the hand that feeds you.
Yep, the Dota2 models have all their textures, rigs and materials working in SFM. Some of the materials seem at act a bit strange though, for example Gyrocopter is extremely shiny. Also, some of the models are separated into multiple pieces for the sake of customization but it's a fairly easy fix, Cyborgmatt explains it in his instructions.
I couldn't find any dota2 .bsp files, but weapons and particles are accessible. I believe SFM runs an older version of Source which is probably why it can't load more complicated data like whole maps which is harder to make legacy friendly. I wish that SFM could import replay files. Imagine the frag videos people could make with that. :O
Oh and for the record I think it's very possible to bring in your own custom props and meshes. I have seen people bring in stuff from Garry's Mod and I've seen people import their submissions to the Steam Workshop. Theoretically it should be possible to make your own custom scene in Hammer, and import a rigged character as long as it's formatted properly. Not easy of course, but possible.
Aha, I figured out what I was doing wrong. I was looking in the tf_movies directory rather than the tf directory. Now everything works swimmingly.
I wish I could say the same for myself. I have only been able to get one particle effect visible. Everything else is conking out on me. And I am just trying to make a poster!

My second shot at SFM. I tried the IK-rig for the characters this time, it was pretty fun to do.
