Update: Still tweaking the metal diffuse and spec to get it to look right but still nothing. I may move on to the face just to take a break. Any an all crits are welcome thanks
Looks like a good start to me! I'm loving The Invincible Iron Man and was surprised when they gave Pepper a suit. My only critique is to bring up a bit more of the mechanical elements. Like around her knees and shoulders are going to have more of the hard edge elements that define the suit a bit more. Can't wait to see more progress!
Looking great man! I would say her feet are getting too narrow. Don't know how close you are sticking to the cover or if you have another image, but they remain practically square. Actually now that I look at the cover, I wonder what the purpose for shaping the feet/toes like that would be?
Heres another update. I've started working on the head/face/hair. Please excuse its current crudeness, I haven't done organic modeling in some time and this is supposed to get me started back in. I'm going to try a few different hair styles with her with some paint overs but the first I modeled was a ponytail not sure if I like it or not. I also have a lot of work to do on the face/head. Any help or crits would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Lots of Ps work this morning. I did a quick hair study to see if I wanted it up or down. Im also shit at hair so this was good practice. There are also some close ups of the head as well.
Yeah superfranky has hit the nail on the head. She does appear doll like due to the childish look she has. Her face is too flat and she has a very large forehead.
But don't get me wrong. It coming along great. It just need a few tweaks here and there. I would recommend taking the face into zbrush/mudbox to help you make the alterations fast.
Thanks for the paintover Tex, Ill make those corrections. There isnt going to be a helmet for her, at least for the time being. There will also be some alpha planes in there to show stray hairs and such.
If you watched that blur tutorial by Sze Jones: Digital Female Character Design, she talks and shows you that you should do as much as you can in your modeling application before taking It to ZBrush. I think that process would benefit this design a lot, i've redone a design 3 times before I was happy so It's just all part of the process and learning what works.
I like the idea, I did feel however that if the design of the suit were more "sexy" <not revealing but more exaggerated (more: Jeffrey Scott Campbell) type then this can really pop.
Make sure you use reference for the face. I would suggest doing Gwyneth Paltrow, but the comic really doesn't look like her. Also I'm not for the bun on the hair. Off the top of my head, I always remember her taking off her helmet and her hair was down.
I like the suit design, though I agree with $!nz that the suit could be a bit "sexier." Smoothing down the hard edges on the thighs and calves would give the suit a sleek and sexy feel.
I think this model is going to turn out great in the end. Hopefully it will give you good practice with creating a female character
@$!nz, @mospheric I thought about doing something a bit more sexy but im just not sure it fits her. Pepper isn't supposed to be flashy and all that. I will however try to exaggerate some portions to giver her curves a bit more accentuation. I am using a reference for the face, my gf actually but im just not comfortable with zbrush yet to get it right. As for her hair I'm planning on doing multiple version of it, the bun just seemed the easiest and you dont see many characters with it. Or i dont at least.
Anyway sorry for the wall of text but when I get home from work before I head out to TDKR Ill make some modifications. Thanks again for all the help!
Maybe a more "sci-fi" haircut could be better. I only saw the Iron Man movies so I don't know how Pepper is in the comic book, but maybe a real "secretary" look, with sophisticated hair and GLASSES could be really sexy.
Gosh, I went on DeviantArt to look for secretaries... what a bunch of pervs ^^. Anyway here a some cool things I found :
Hey everyone, took a long weekend to step away from the project. Im back with some updates/changes to the model. Ive made the changes according to Texs paint over. Let me know if anything else sticks out. Ive also changed her hips and breast size a little trying to balance between exaggerate and ridiculous.
Awesome work! The head looks way better. I do think the shape of the head needs to be reteaked a bit. It appears to too elongated in the back. Here is an image that may help.
I think you have something there mospheric. Ill tweak it some more when I get home from the day job. I still dont know about the hairstyle... Every time i look at Bogdanbl4 Barbarian I want to do something like that its so good!. Heres the link http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=99126
Face is getting better, prob need a few tweaks here and there. Ive added a new bun hairstyle and I still want to do a medium and long style as well but those I think Ill do straight in zbrush cause I dont know how to set it up in maya first.
Update! Heres the first diffuse pass. Its very primitive right now so I know there's a lot to be done still but I thought I should update. Im also getting used to how alphas work in Marmoset as well. Let me know what you think, thanks
Update! Heres the first spec pass. For some reason Marmoset wont output the alpha for the hair in screens, Ill have to work on that later. Ive got the spec and diffuse updated a little to give it a bit more life. Any crits are welcome, thanks
Starting to shape up man! The Iron Maiden image you tweeted earlier has two different material definitions for the metal. The grey parts are more brushed metal, and the red parts have sharper highlights. Not sure if you want to go with that. Just bringing it to your attention :P
Do you have a spec map created or just getting the lighting/shader right?
Ive got the spec map started yea. How do you know hes got two different materials? I mean I want it to look as real as possible so that may be a road Ill go down.
Maybe I'm seeing things, but it looks like the highlights on the grey parts are more diffused than on the red. It may be worth trying as long as you keep it subtle too.

Best of luck we are watching.
