Is it just 3D stuff that is allowed? There is a lot of awesome 2D on the forum in the sketchbooks etc.
I think 2D is allowed too. But i didn't count the sketchbook, WIPs, artdumps, contests thread. Or you would be in ! But i already spent the afternoon browsing all the pimping and previews thread and searching banner material. I don't want to start again :poly142:. I wanted to work on my LEGO minifig today lol.
Wow lot of good finds lephenix, I'd seen less than a third of those...
Man Adam, can we think about giving a few more people the "authority" to create new showcase/banner entries? Like make mods able to do it or something?
Instead of banners, why not to have a top row, like Zbrushcentral? It allows much more rotativity. And letting this top row save an archive of best works, like the one in ZBC does, it's even better.

Guys here are so good to fall in oblivion.
A few of us were asking for this a while ago. Can't remember what the thread was but there was a bunch of good suggestions and mockups of how people would like to see PC incorporate thumbs.
I'd love to see a top row. And if possible a row of smaller thumbs with the most recent images posted (in the P&P section and sketchbooks only) which is also a feature on ZBC.
Or another ideas was to have a seperate page/section with the most recent images. Bit like CGhub.
This is after all an art forum. Lets see some art. I miss a ton of good stuff here because I can't be arsed to trawl threads.
EDIT: anyhoo, this is probably not the right place to bring up the debate again. But here's the thread. And here's one of the better mockups imo. I'm sure the PC team would like to do something like this but maybe its not possible.
I really really dislike the idea of having a top row like zbcentral
I do however like the idea that all mods can be in power of adding/changing to the rotating banner. That would be so refreshing. Most of the awesome art shown in this thread alone I've never even seen before (and I consider myself a very active member)

This is the main reason we need a top row, image hub or other way to see images we would otherwise miss. Think about how much art not so active members miss out on. I would also argue that the forum would attract more members with more accessible art up front.
I nominate it all the time so here it is as always. But you'll have to contact him as his screenshots have shrunk in size for some reason and I can't find his portfolio which had the fullsize ones.
When I visit Cghub and ZbrushCentral I pretty much only look at the top row stuff, whereas in Polycount I'll look through the whole forum and get to see awesome work and posts that maybe wouldn't make it to a top row setup.

Actually, I'd prefer to see a top row that shows the most recent uploads rather than the best work.
Either way I still think PC needs more art in its layout.
A top row would severely devolve the quality of Polycount as a community. It also promotes laziness, as people rarely look through the various threads.
For one, people here already post tons of meme images in hot threads anyway. 90% of the posts in those threads are simple "Have my babies!" type of posts. I don't see how that's any different than "Top Row" at ZBC. If anything, it's worse once you get a page full of childish meme pics.
Second, even in ZBC when a piece does get top row, that thread then gets lots of exposure and you get the usual "Nice work, awesome details" posts in it. So it's the same result (though the lack of meme images is encouraging).
Third, on the laziness thing, just this thread alone proves that wrong. There are tons of pieces here that I've never seen, and I always have Polycount open in a tab at work, and on top of that I check the WAYWO thread at least 752 times a day. At least.
Fourth, if the art is good, then the art is good. I think the situation of a newbie randomly producing great artwork that gets ignored because of a top-row mechanism is imaginary. I seriously doubt that'll happen. If the artwork is good enough, it'll make some noise.
Yeah, I'd love it if the Have-my-babies type posts wouldn't be there, and we could get some actual art discussion going on. But since that doesn't seem to happen, might as well make it easy to navigate. I don't see the harm in that.

Currently we have no interest in a 'top row' feature at Polycount. As for all mods doing banners - there's a lot that needs to get done in order to get the banners up, most of which a moderator account doesn't have access to, unfortunately. We'll do our best to get banners updated more regularly, though. In the future a more streamlined process for banners will be something we'd like to include with Polycount.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I'm getting to an update on these today. I'll take down whats there and add around 10 new ones.
11 new banners added to the rotation, with the older ones moved out. All are viewable in the Polycount Showcase forum.
If you guys notice any problems with the banners (wrong names/links etc.) please PM me directly as I might miss this thread. I'll to fixing it a lot faster if its brought directly to my attention.
I'm going to keep this thread active from here on out and ask you guys to dump threads in here you think we should be featuring in our rotation here on the site.
Thanks again for all the great suggestions everyone, it was very helpful.
I like the new banners! I find the ninja turtle one is rather odd in composition, I would rather see the face in colour than the current banner with neck in colour and the sculpt in skinmatcap, maybe its just me?
Some amazing work up on those new banners- great work eveyrbody!
It would be really nice if clicking on the banners took you to the approporiate thread/ post though. It feels like a bit of a missed opportunity not to have this setup so we can see more pictures of the awesome work that is being showcased.

You have to click on the authors name in the bottom right of the banner to go to their thread
Fantastic new banners! They're a treat to look at!
My only gripe would be with one character in particular. While being a very well executed model, that Wehrmacht/SS soldier bothers me quite a bit. Maybe that's because I've watched too many documentaries of Nazi atrocities in death/extermination camps, and being originally from Europe doesn't help.
Adam thanks for all the hard work! I'm super flattered to have a banner for my heli on this site, especially while being in the middle of a job search. Hopefully more people can get their stuff rotated in from time to time because this thread is jam packed with quality. I still can't get over how much of these I haven't seen before. Characters, environments, creatures, vehicles....so much eye candy! :poly142:
ps another vote for polygoo's car - that actually inspired me quite a bit to push the quality on the copter
What are the chances of getting animated gifs working in the banner?
The thing with animated GIFs is that to maintain the quality and dimensions needed for the banner, the file size of the GIF is going to be a few MB (as opposed to <1MB for a static image). Now whilst this isn't an issue for people with quick broadband and unlimited data, some people are viewing on mobile and on internet packages with data caps. So if they have to load a few MB of GIF every time they are on a page it's going to suck. Hell, even if you embed it in a thread some people get annoyed because they have to load it. I don't think it will be likely unless there is a low bandwidth/mobile version of the site that doesn't auto-load GIFs, but maybe someone else has a better solution.

Ok never mind, I found his site and all his pictures are small :S
How come?

I totaly agree with this.

I agree that the badass vehicle artists do usually get overlooked/ignored bigtime on this site. Would be nice to throw them a bone!
Also agree that the turtle banner feels kinda contrived with the sculpt face.
Thanks for listening to the community btw!!
