I've been itching to do a humanoid fantasy creature, so I'm going to see how far I can get on "The Beast" character class. I got some reference together so far. Time to start roughing it out.
Here's the start to my guy's head. I have a question. I want to open the mouth. I made the base mesh in Maya and he does have 2 separate lips, but it zbrush, they're fused. What's the best way to get it to open?
Edit: Got it to work with the move brush at the lowest level. I'm still interested in other, probably better, ideas though.
I have tomorrow off and I'm looking forward to working on this sculpt some more. I'm still torn between him having human feet like the Minotaur or goat feet like a satyr?
The horns and the face look really cool. If you are trying to make the armor out of metal then the helmet needs some work it looks too soft to be metal. If you are sticking with leather then it looks just like leather. If you want it to look like metal the edges sould be a little sharper. Especially around the horns the helmet looks really soft. Overall it is a really good start.
Thanks! I am thinking I'd like to switch to metal since I've done a lot of leather armor in the past - which is probably why it looks like leather :P . I'll focus on sharpening it up.
Your digitigrade legs are looking a little awkward. If you rotate the thigh forwards a bit and adjust the calf and tarsus accordingly, it should work better.
Looks like I barely did anything this weekend. I spent most of the time trying to figure out how I wanted some things to look. New pauldrons, belt edits, and legs edits. Feet and shins still really rough, but i figured I'd at least get a pic of this weekend's work up. C&C welcome as always.
Very impressive so far the helmet is looking better and I love the way you have done the hair. I am not sure I like how low down he sits on his legs but the muscles are impressive. I am really liking this one. Keep it up!
Thanks for the crit! I put him a bit lower down because I was hoping for a less refined look. In the beginning he was looking more like a fey guardian type of creature, and I really want him to be a brute force thing, on the same level as maybe an uruk-hai orc. Here's hoping I can nail that look.
I was going to texture the whole thing today, but got called into work. Putting up the weekend progress now.
I've never really posed a character without a rig before. Any advice would be great, or are their any good tuts around for that? Thanks and C&C welcome.
Still working on this guy. Most of last week was spent with UVs; the hours I've been putting in at work have not been helping, but I managed to get some time this weekend. I love every minute of poly painting. I need to finish the straps and add in some studs, and then it's on to making his weapon.
been watching this thread for a while; you've made a lot of progress.
So far, the model itself is very symmetrical, making it look boring; unoriginal.
- The hair is swept perfectly in the same motion either side
- The colors (I know you've poly painted) however there is no damage, no story behind him. Hes a beast? but perfectly toned skin - no scars, cuts, bruises? No cuts or scratches to his Armour, I've noticed 1 scratch on the entire piece..
- From your most recent image, I feel your cloth on the second pose seems quite rigid on the thigh and back (fourth pose).
I know at first symmetry makes it look visually nicer but give him a story
Cool thanks, I'll can get working on those things for sure. His armor actually has tons of scratches, but they're not showing up well. Just means I should make them pop more I guess. Right now he only has 3 scars on his body, but if you couldn't see them, then they probably need some more TLC too. Adding bruising is a good idea. Maybe I could add in some more open wounds, like some recent battle damage.
I am having difficulty with getting the cloth to look natural. I'll pull it around a bit more. Are you talking about the hair on his feet? He's sharing legs and arms right now.
I agree that the guy needs a story. I've been struggling with how to actually pull that off from the onset. I was thinking about maybe adding some more tribal stuff to him. Maybe put in some crudely done piercings/scarification? If you have any ideas please let me know.

What do people think?
I got some work done this morning though. C&C always welcome
More sculpting to come.
Thanks for looking!
C&C welcome!
Cheers!
