I'm new and trying to learn the basics.

If anyone would be kind enough to give links to some good tutorials (paid or free doesn't matter).

I'm trying to learn the basics of 3ds Max but I'm having a hard time learning it because any tutorial I do follow have a very robotic flow to them.

I cannot find tutorials that actually explain what I'm doing, they just have the step 1: do this etc, step 2: do this etc, and it's hard for me to understand and apply anything I do retain from these tutorials to projects I want to attempt by myself (without the tutorials guiding me).

So if anyone knows of a good tutorial or series of tutorials for 3ds Max 2013, I would be so thankful for their help.

The tutorials that come with max (as cheesy as they are) can't be beat for learning the software itself. Youtube is a great resource too. Once you get past the program basics I suggest you check out the wiki here on polycount and if you want to fork out some cash, 3dmotive and eat3d have some really nice products.

WARNING: this is all from memory so I may have some things backwards

To get started, make a box > right click convert to editable poly > enter a mode (1. vertex, 2. edge, 3. border, 4. polygon, 5. element I think) and begin pushing and pulling it. Select two edges and use connect on them, or swift loop or cut to add extra edges.

Scroll your mouse wheel to zoom in and out, push and hold mouse wheel to pan, alt + mousewheel to rotate. Hold control while selecting to select multiple, hold alt to deselect. Right click in the empty canvas to deselect

You just have to dig in and get your hands dirty, you'll get it!
