lightmapping problems

I'm pretty new to lightmaps and am trying to better understand them through lots of trial and error. When I lightmap meshes with a lot of separate geometry, I sometimes get the error that it has overlapping lightmap UVs (when it certainly does not) and I can't help but wonder if that is because the UV shells are too close together that the lightmap resolution is reading the sells as overlapping?
