Spawn per unit is perfect for things like this if you want to keep it as just particles.
Alternatively, you can try doing a ribbon as well. This can get iffy depending on the motion of the character's animation and how long you make the ribbon. Sometimes ribbons can go wonky and twist, which makes it very obvious that it's a flat plane. But if it's short lived it can disperses quickly and yield awesome results!
