Aye, this is super exciting and i hope it trends at other game companies! I've been toying with the idea of doing a set myself, think i'll wait a few weeks before starting one though, little busy atm.
It's a great chance to do some zbrush work and maybe even get some pocket change while getting your art in a valve game. I mean... what more can you ask for?
If you sort by matches you can see which heroes are the most popular and get an idea of who might be a good hero to do a revamp for. Note that some heroes are new such as phantom assassin and chaos night so their numbers are a bit inflated. Phantom assassin tends to be pretty popular globally as a dota hero though.
is there an explanation of the copywright/usage restrictions on what can go in the game?
would suck to find out my Harry Potter character model wouldn't get put in

- from the workshop page, though should be considered a standard anwser for any pre-existing character/design being used without express written permission.
Would the point light baking thing only really be used on stylized art or can it be used on more next gen type models? And what exactly would it help? Not only that, would baking point lights be done in Max?

This is really cool!
It's mostly for stylized work, these characters are always going to be lit from above and they want the characters dark on bottom and light on top, that map helps with both those requirements.
I wouldn't expect it to be too different from Max, Dloud.
Make sure you enable advanced lighting options, and put in a global light with maybe 30% strength and a couple well positioned spots at maybe 30% then just bake. You could even do each light separately and adjust the opacity and levels to fine tune it using other in game textures as a reference.
I'm not sure if this is up anywhere else, feel free to remove if so.
I just think every character artist needs a copy of this tome of goodness on their wall!!
THANK YOU VALVE!!!
Thanks to Valve indeed. It is not necessary to mount these on our wall (since I only have one wall, which happens when you are sharing the room,) but this definitely should go to our artist guide archives.
I really like the examples of using a value gradient over the entire character. It's a technique I've heard of before and they make great use of it here. I'm going to certainly start using that.
Well it's not tacked to my wall, but I did get them printed into a little booklet at Kinko's. I don't know why, but for some reason I tend to review and appreciate a thing more if I have a physical copy of it.
Yes! I'm so doing that. I'm doing that TONIGHT!
I was going to try to find some website online to print it and deliver it to me.. but there's a kinkos store down the street. Thanks for the idea!
whats the point ? i cant submit becouse i dont have a key.
Plus if your in a hurry to get into the game and start making stuff, it is possible to buy into the beta for £25 i think it is. In the dota 2 items you can basically buy a beta key, probably need to know someone who already is in though.

As usual, Valve are the bestest.
