I love it. Probably my favorite of all the ArenaNet Art Tests.
Not sure how you're going to go about the textures, but he looks very very pristine right now, like fresh out of the box/action figure pristine. In the concept art he's pretty battle-scarred. Maybe that's something you don't need to sculpt, but just thought I'd mention anyway.
I still need to figure out how much resolution i have to texture the pieces, i think it will be atleast the double of what i have shown in that bake so it will probably be enough to get some details in there. The gritty look will be done in the textures themselves btw
Slick! Can I ask how you baked it out? All together, than piece by piece or in chunks to get clean bakes for each section? Silhouette is looking good.. gonna use those extra tris to break it up further with some alpha'd planes?
Edit read El Scorcho's comment:This is just an echo.
Minor problemo but hardly noticeable is that right under his skirt, you can see through the geometry, deleted faces? Just a heads up.
Great work man. I have to say that I don't think the fur quite reads like fur. im guessing all the brown parts hanging off are fur? To me, they read as solid pieces of plastic almost. I think within each part, the fur is too segmented and very similar in size and shape. Real fur should be much more random and appear softer. I think you can get a better fur look by lessening the separation between the tufts, adding softer highlights maybe in the spec.
Slosh: I do know what you mean but im pretty happy with the look even though it might be a bit more stylistic. i tried adding some more microdetails on the furtexture but that would compromise the readability unless if i went for a fully handpainted fur approach but thats not what i want for this
I gotta agree with slosh, at first glance I thought they were brown leaves, could definitely stand to be a lot more random and less sharp. Also he's reading a little more like a dwarf than a barbarian. Even though I think he's about the right height head wise (6 1/2 to 7) I think the size of his feet are making him feel shorter. I do like how you painted the skin, the tonal differences are good though I would of liked to see more of that in your other textures as well. The metal could use more colors in there rather than solid greys but overall pretty nice job, little bit more stylized than guildwars 2 but nice.
This is looking great! Really love the colours, I personally like the way you did the fur. Might look a little too sharp but works with the style you've gone for. I agree with dwgagner that he looks more like a dwarf than barbarian. It's the leg length and the chunky feet I think, I recon with only a few small tweaks it could be awesome. The mirroring on the leopard skin is a little obvious, and I'd make the straps and large metal studs on the boots more asymmetrical as they are really straight right now. The hair line is also a little flat, might look cooler if it follows the brows and creates more of a V shape.
I have to say, this looks pretty dope. The only critique I can really give is that the legs feel a bit more stocky than in the concept. Also, I'm hoping you plan on rigging this and posing him. It obviously holds its own as a model, but to really show off the character I would love to see something a little more dynamic than a t-pose.
Dwgagner: i scaled the feet down a bit and you`re right it does make him look more normalsized
Beats: tnx i already tweaked some of those things
Texelion: haha yeah i`ll make sure i`ll post the flats here when i update.
luke , praetus: tnx i appreciate it
as i said i already tweaked some things but i still need to do some texture touchup so i`ll post another image when i`ve done that. in the meanwhile i decided i`m going to give him a weapon for the presentation shots. Whipped this up in the last couple of hours.
This is really great stuff. I love the texturing and the expression on his face, but I think the fur doesn't quite read like fur. It seems too leaf-like to read like fur to me. Otherwise, everything else is solid.
Turned out great. I would've liked the fur & spotted piece in the front to have been lighter/whiter. That's what I was more picturing from the concept and from the norn as a whole, but I didn't want to say anything because you seemed to know where you wanted to take it from the beginning, and it works.
I think the fur turned out great as well, nice work!
tnx a lot guys , i really appreciate the comments
on the fur i think its a like it or dont thing, i do realize it isnt realistic fur but then again in my eyes it still gives me the feel of it
Great job! Your livestream link is no longer working and the vids title's don't seem to give any indication as to which might contain the fur demonstration. Anyone have a working link? Much obliged, thnx.

Done baking, time for texturing.
you can view it in 3d here

A quick proportion check and this guys good to go
Mask_Salesman: i`m not too sure about that. his arms dont stop when they go into the padded shoulderpieces, they continue under there
ablaine: yup and yup. the spare tris will be spend on alphafur

Beautiful!
Keep pushing those speculars! beauty
I love the metal pieces.

El Scorcho/$!nz: that was a sorting issue in max, kind of a shame its even buggy with 1bit alphas
ZacD: added some geometry in there to give it extra silhouette
here`s another update, 6348 tris

You could post static screenshots, cause this turnaround hurts my eyes, can't focus on anything ^^.
Oh, and I just think : ennemies coming from behind can "knock knock" him down... XDDD

You have just nailed it! Great job.
