Forge is about conflict, first and foremost. It is the heart of the game design. We decided from the very beginning, everything we built was going to have its purpose in battle. This would help us define everything man-made in the game, from costuming to architecture. Any decorative architecture would be driven by either the need to frighten enemies, protect the occupants, or bolster the occupants with ferocity. The rest is functional. Structures need to look built to withstand the ultimate stress test; war. Walls, pillars, and statues would be huge and reinforced with metal. Stone blocks would appear as if they were laid by giants. Wooden gates and doors would be built out of the entire tree for extra girth and protection. If it didnt hurt, frighten, or protect, it had no place in the game world.
As far as I know, no native tribes rode panthers into battle. That might have changed the outcome of the taking of the New World. Take that guns, germs and steel! I ride a F***ing panther!
One of the calls the team made early on was to shake loose from two clichés many modern games have fallen into. Strong characters are almost always many men, and female characters almost always wear ridiculous armor that is built more to flaunt fleshy bits than to protect from a swinging weapon. It was strongly felt amongst the team that we could make a kick-ass female Warden and Assassin that were both fun to play and functionally clothed.
just found this live-stream (through RockPaperShotgun!) of the alpha gameplay.
I don't know if it's the same actual game as the above video, but it lets you see all the arts better. Also it's 6-freaking-hours long!
Just a little Heads-up here, Forge is going to be releasing a playable Alpha version of the game sometime in the next couple days for Kickstarter backers to check out as well as some daily forum draws,
Man this thing looks fantastic. The PvP part is my favorite aspect of MMOs, and why I even subscribe to them in the first place. This thing looks like it's giving me just that one good piece.
Edit:
I can't seem to be able to register for the forums. It said it sent an e-mail verification, but I never got it. I can't even see any way to contact the forum admin through e-mail. Anyone knows what's up with that?
Forge is now on steam's Greenlight, git yer asses over there and support it people!
BigJohn: I seem to remember having forum issue's when I initially signed up, it registered fine but wouldn't let me do anything at first and unfortunately I can't for the life of me remember what I did Have you tried just re-registering?
Yeah actually I got it sorted out. I just e-mailed the main e-mail address on the site, even though it didn't say it was for support, and they helped me out.
It's really not an mmo at all, that was an unfortunate comparison early on when explaining it that just ended up confusing people. If anything it's a fantasy-third-person-shooter with spells instead of guns. The mmo part was just in reference to the skillset.
Totally valid concern and has kept me from even looking at more than a few mp games where I know I just don't have the time to keep the playing field even (ie Fun). Forge is pretty much skill based and the progression system doesn't (currently) equal unlocks, so it should be a fair bit easier to jump into the game later on.
also, steam just updated and gave me this swanky screencap:

I can very much relate to this, feels like that if you didn't start playing them when it all began, then you're kind of lost..
... Maybe. Or maybe it's just me using procrastination as a excuse for not getting heavily addicted to awesome games
