Hi fellow Polycounters,
I'm currently working on a old gas pump, it doesn't serve a purpose yet.
Just something to put on my portfolio.
The model is finished unless someone comes up with a good idea to improve it offcourse.
Polycount is
728.
Comments and critics are always welcome.

Now onto the detailing.
Comments and critics are welcome as always.
- Add grunge, dirt etc.
- Add soft edges (Make some nice bakes if you have a high poly)
- Add a good specular map.
Hope this helps
into making the whole station, we'll see.
@Roelant That was what I meant by "Now onto the detailing." Sorry if I wasn't clear.
But the soft edges intrigued me, can you show me an example?
A high poly version is in the making.
You really want to round out the sign on top, not only with more segments in the cylinder but to make the front and back bulbous also. You also want to spend enough polys on the pump handle and actually create a hook or stand for it to rest in.
If there's something that catches your eye, please let me know.
I'm also updating the low poly version to look a bit more "current gen".
I will post screens of this soon.
Polycounts are always hard to judge. It's down to what is the purpose of the asset and what type of game will it feature in.
In terms of the model I'd add a nice sign in. In the reference earlier the shell sign was screwed onto the front of the pump. You could design your own or do something else to add more interest to the piece.
The handle itself needs more work. Looking at that ref some have specific elements such as bolts and moulded handles. Which one have you chosen to produce ?
It looks like you need some support edges on a few things, like the lower vent and the bottom of the pump hole? I'm not sure if you want those to be as rounded as they are?
I think a bit more poly modeling on the pump handle and the support are in order. It looks like mostly primitives without much done, yet. The nozzles normally have a hole in the handle and the there is a bump on the support it rests on. Or some have a hook and just hang, but those models weren't widely used because people would mistakenly rest the trigger on the hook.
The point where the hose attaches to the handle needs some connecting fittings, these are easy to do with primitives and add a lot of detail.
For hoses and wires I like to use splines then convert them to geometry (either in the spline menu or throw an edit poly on top of the modifier stack). Splines are great because they stay smooth and you can push a few knots around and they will put the verts where they need to go and keep things smooth.
You should add more details on the nozzle part because its looking empty and like it doesn't have any mechanical parts in it.
You have some problems with the round sign on top of the gas pump so can we see the wires of the H-poly model?
The are still some problems with pinching, I can't seem to fix. :poly131:
For the texturing I decided to do it in Mudbox, we'll see what it brings.
@ivanzu Off the high poly?
The final polycount is just below 1.400 (1.399 to be exact )
I'm going to start texturing the high poly with a Ptex setup in Mudbox
and afterwards bake everything down on the low poly.
I hope to wrap things up by the end of Friday.
Here are some screens, comments are welcome as always.
