You want to build like it's a real structure. Starting with a strong foundation. The materials you choose should be based on weight/longevity. As in, starting with a stone foundation and laying down wood. Or if it's a cleared area, a wood foundation, but you wouldn't stack stone on top of this as it would be quick to rot and collapse. You'd want to beware a stone arch doorway for stucco/wood walls.
The chimney is something you can use to model OUT of the building with a high stack for more silhouette information. Anyway, a large stone fireplace has so much more integration into the structure as opposed to just being a mesh you slap against a wall.
Environment character, culture, storytelling. This is best told through props used by the people that live in it in their daily lives AND building dilapidation.
