Hey guys,
So recently I’ve worked on an eat3d tutorial for Mech sculpting. Where in the last character the focus was getting a fusion between organic and mechanical, I was trying to keep the design of this completely mechanical.
For the design, it was heavily influenced by the Marine and Firebat from Starcraft 2.
The model itself was completely made in Zbrush.
For the render I decimated the mesh and brought it into 3ds max.
It was rendered in passes with Vray then composited in Photoshop.
Anyways here’s the final render:
The DVD can be found here:
http://eat3d.com/zbrush_hardsurface
Here’s a clay render of the back:
And here’s a zbrush screen-grab turnaround. I figured I’d simply put this one in one image so you’ll have to scroll sideways:
Here's a lighting test that I really liked but didn't get to finish of a low poly version:
I started with a very basic zsphere layout then made individual smaller meshes using zspheres2:
After that I sculpted on these meshes until I had something I liked. Here cleanliness is not important all I’m focusing on is the shapes and silhouette:
Then I started making a clean mesh from the concept sculpt. This had a lot to do with re-mesh and extraction. The tubes are made with zspheres:
Then I added details. For this character I was trying to use alpha stamps sparingly, so many of the details are small doodads here and there:
For the final render I decimated the mesh and brought it into 3ds max. I set up a very basic light setup with an HDRI and a few vray lights for use as light cards. Then I rendered out passes.
Finally I comped the passes until it was the image you see at the top.
Anyways, take care and I hope you enjoy!

Really awesome stuff man, looks great.
Out of curiosity, is there any traditional concept/process you have, or was everything started right off the bat in 3d?
want this DVD!
Fantastic work!

Co-incidentally, I'm half way through downloading your video now. It should prove pretty useful for the fabrication stuff I'm doing at work.
DVD ordered.
Pretty Schweet.
I'm not a character artist, but im sure this will translate for props also.
learned ALOT from it
and yes, in many cases Zbrush hardsurface modeling is much faster than regular subD modeling
cool shit!
aaaand with this testimonial i'm sold haha.
Kinda wish such videos came with a transcript tho - it's not that easy to use when it comes to going back to it for a specific function. Or at least, some kind of html table of content. Or even, user bookmarks ?
@SeanEG: thanks man! Where do I claim this prize? haha.
@Skamberin: Thanks man! I hope you like it!
@suburbbum: Thanks! I hope you and your roomie learn a lot from it XD
@Razgriz: Thanks man! As for traditional process I don't often use one, and I didn't for this piece. I usually concept in zbrush. That's why I like the zbrush process much more than sub-d because it's easier to find the forms you want. With sub-d if you want to massively change something it's such a hassle.
@moof: Thanks man haha.
@BetelGeist: Thanks dude! I hope you enjoy it and learn a lot!
@daphz: thanks man!
@Zelnekov: Thank you!
@ENODMI: Thanks man. Yeah pixologic is really blossoming zbrush when it comes to hard surface. I'm pretty excited about it.
@SimonT: Thanks!
@JonSnow: Hey thanks man! BTW A song of Ice and Fire is such a great series! I can't wait for ADWD
@Electro: Thanks man! I hope you enjoy it!
@dom: haha thanks dude! I love the work you did on sc2! sc2 was my sole inspiration for this character!!
@slipgate: Thanks man! I'm such a huge fan of your work. Your dom-war entry is still legendary! I've learned a lot from you about the way you work so thanks so much! I hope I could contribute to what you already have in that brain of yours XD.
@BadgerBaiter: haha thanks man!
@felipefrango: Thanks man! I was trying the whole time to lessen the appearance that it was done in zbrush. I learned a lot while making it.
@DLoud: Thanks man! XD. The dvd is completed!
@seanEg: thx for link
@Peris: Thanks man! I'm a huge fan of your work as well. I was baffled how you took the Unearthly Challenge by yourself when other people were working in groups! So amazing O_O I hope you like it.
@itismario: Thanks man!
@3dflasher: Thanks man! I hope you enjoy it
@Jackblade: Thanks! I hope the dvd is useful
@GarageBay9: haha thanks! I hope you like it!
@Av7xrocker97: Thanks man! Ah there were two things I didn't create in zbrush. The hydraulics in the knees were created in max, and this one piece on the back that you can't actually see cause there is too much stuff on top of it. But these were very minor pieces that could have been created in zbrush using primatives, but I saved a bit of time using this method.
All the refinery is done in Zbrush. It handles everything very well.
@Cordell Felix: Thanks man! I hope you like it! I think a lot of the techniques I use may be even more applicable to making props. Before I started the dvd I had to test the method to make sure I could do a whole character with it.
This is what I came up with in about 20 minutes or so. So doing certain things in zbrush are much faster. Sometimes they are slower than sub-d. It's just important to know your tools and choose which is best for the job!
@Slipgate: XD I'm so glad you like it! Yes especially when you're coming up with the shapes or need to change stuff it's so much faster!
@LRoy: haha thanks .
@pior: Thanks man! That's a good idea with the transcript. Or like you said a document of notes simply stating which tools are in use for what. I didn't even think of that T_T. I'll mention it to Riki
Thanks you guys for all the positive feedback! If I left something out let me know .
however I have never worked on any game, let alone SC2
I wish... maybe one day!
Still, I shall be ordering this DVD so maybe I can work on SC3? If there is one planned... never played them tbh
anyways, haha DOM awesome sc2 work XD
@Progg: Thanks man!
@bounchfx: haha sure. I'm quite fertile right now XD
@Tea Monster: haha thanks man. Yeah zbrush is robust!
However, I make an awesome cup of tea, so remember that when it comes to SC3
Hope to be getting the DVD soon as I have sorted out my financial difficulties... along with a new PC
Cheers
