Hi there! This comp looks verrrry interesting :-), can't wait to look into it more! But first a quick question guys:
Can a single submitted video count for both the 'Best Character Animation' and 'Best One-Minute Video' categories? Or must they both be separate projects?
Edit: One more question... can participants use assets gained from the software's featured community-created library (including any paid for assets)?
Hello ! Nice idea your contest ! I'm really excited !
I have a question, I don't know if I've understand everything ^^
The animation short movie should be done only with game animations , like walk cycle animation, interactions animations , fight anim, etc.. (only motion presets, as we can see in every video games) and all of these should be combined, or we can do traditional animation, like video games trailers (like the last Star Wars Battlefront trailer, with game assets , but not ingame animations) ?
(hope my question is clear, my english isn't perfect sorry ^^ )
Hi SuperSoupy, it's John from Reallusion... Thanks for your question. Yes, if your character animation submission is also at least one-minute then you may submit for both. However, be advised that we are looking for some sharp, well produced one-minute movies so if you can accomplish all-in-one, then fire-away!
Yes, you may use content from the community or other libraries. Props, scenes, characters, etc... The animation does need to be original.
Thanks for the quick reply! I signed up for the software and liking what I see :-). But have one more question:
On the game contest news page (http://www.polycount.com/2015/04/24/reallusion-game-character-animation-contest/), it mentions four free content characters that would be great for animators (Tech Trooper, Special Forces Character, Hero & Horseman and Dragon). Thing is, after going through the library in the software, and even trying out the demo for iClone 6, I can't find these character avatars anywhere. Do you know how to get hold of these? Are they available as an add-on download and if so, where to get that from?
Thanks, and this is shaping up to be a very cool contest!
Hi ThoJah,
For the one-minute movie me you will be best to make the game trailer style video instead of just motion clips. We hope to see something exciting and interesting. You will need to feature some original character animation in your submission, but feel free to get as cinematic as you like with the production.
So I've got a couple of questions.
Some year ago, I created a parody video of the new "let's play" trend with a gremlins character ( [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q110XL4XPMc[/ame] ). I know the video must be related on video gaming, so I wondered if this kind of derivation of the rules is acceptable, since it's still related to gaming, but not in a "traditionnal" way. Am I allowed to show elements of gameplay from a game ? And is the gremlins character acceptable as well (this is a model I made some years ago, but since it's based on an existing movie... ) ?
If not, don't worry, I got others ideas :
Are indie game accepted ? Some month ago I made this fan video for Cry Of Fear ( [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yv-st4YPESU[/ame] ) which is basically a first person action sequence. As for the five nights at Freddy's characters, I made this very little video featuring some sweet models I found : [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uqjum666Q1I[/ame] . Are they usable for a longer video on this contest ?
And finally, is there a PG limitations ? Are blood or swears accepted ?
I think, Reallusion takes that "game character" thing not so seriously. I think, they want to see a character designed to used in a realtime engine. I will participate on that contest too and I took the "game character" thing a bit too serious. I will do a "Lara Croft" video using iClone 5.
About that "swear & violence" thing ... if you look over the forum from reallusion, you'll see the last competition (Battle Competition). There are some bloody shots in there. So I think that should be not a problem if you don't cross certain lines ...
Thanks for your question and all of the example clips. The gremlin as a character is fine and if you did all the animation for the gremlin, then that would be a fine too. The style for the gremlin video is ok, but remember you will be judged only for the character animation in the Best Character Animation category and for the Best One-Minute movie you will want to consider the whole production along with including your original character animation.
Any type of game or game-style is fine to emulate, parody or mash-up... AAA or Indie. However if you use actual game footage in your one-minute movie, I'd keep it to a minimum or make sure it balances well with your original character animated segments.
You may use models and characters from games or other libraries.
Although we don't want to hinder the creative spirit, there will be an opportunity to showcase the winners in the press so keeping things PG language is not a bad idea. Wanna do blood, etc... not a problem, as long as it helps tell your story or showcase your animation.
After experimenting with the software I've come across an issue with may prove to be quite disruptive in my animation pipeline.
I've noticed that the version of 3DExchange that has been supplied for the comp does not have an option to export to FBX. The only options that I can find are ones that export over to iClone 5 and export as an obj. Is there a separate plugin required for FBX export?
Quick question, sorry if it is repeated but I need a little clarity here: what exactly can be considered for the 'character animation' category? Must it be limited to just game-play animations like jumps/runs/attacks OR can it be also a short sequence but under a minute?
For example, if I have a two-character sequence for say, 30 seconds can that be considered for this? That being said, is there a frame limit for this category?
im alittle confused as to how to join the contest. Can we use maya or max and rigs we find else where to animate and compile it to a video and submit it for the contest ? or we have to use the iclone software ?
Hi Fieryash,
Yes you can do the contest with maya, max or your tool and rig of choice. If you choose to try iClone for the contest then you can also be considered for the $1000 Best Use of iClone award.
The contest is open to all 3D tools, although if you choose to try iClone as part of your contest entry to qualify for the $1000 Best Use of iClone prize then you can download the tools below:
This is the iClone 5 and 3DXchange 5 PRO versions, which will allow you to import any 3D model or character rig and animate it with iClone. This version of iClone and 3DXchange will require you to render your scene in iClone. You can render video or image sequences.
If you want to export your character and animation via FBX for use outside of iClone so you can continue working with other tools in your pipeline, then youll need to download and install 3DXchange PIPELINE trial version. The trial version will give you 15 FBX exports. The download info for 3DXchange PIPELINE and the trial limitations can be found here:

Hi,
I have many question....
1- Do I have to make video from any video games or from my idea about video games?
2- Can we us effect videos from example after effect to all the renders to make a good video or we just have to us the final renders from iclone or ndigo and nothing else ??
3- Can we make many Characters from many video games in one idea video or make shots from on game play only ?
4- last question....can we us a character model(like Assassin's Creed )from original game or we make it from scratch ?
thanks
Hello! Thanks for joining the contest! Let me answer your questions below:
1- Do I have to make video from any video games or from my idea about video games? Your original idea is fine and you do not need to make video from a game.
2- Can we us effect videos from example after effect to all the renders to make a good video or we just have to us the final renders from iClone or indigo and nothing else ?? You can use After Effects or other video editing/VFX tools you like to enhance your submission.
3- Can we make many Characters from many video games in one idea video or make shots from on game play only ? You can include all the characters you like in your submission, but your animation is important too. You can also do mash-up of various game titles as a theme for your submission.
4- last question....can we us a character model(like Assassin's Creed )from original game or we make it from scratch ? It's really up to you on what you want to you use for your characters. If you can use original content, that's fine. If you want to use game content or characters from a library, that's fine too. Many posts in the WIP threads show original content and also game character likenesses used in their projects.
We can use game characters from certain video games in our work provided that we attain permissions from the company that own said characters? Seeing how this is a contest with compensation awarded, I'm iffy about the use of some game characters. I'm assuming fair use plays a part?
Yes, please consider the usage rights to any chosen content and maintain those terms. If you use a game model, that's fine to do so, but check the terms. Thanks!
I have a question too.
It seems my movie will be a bit longer than 5 minutes. I already cut it down, but I think I will end at minute 6 or 6.30 min. I just want to know if this is acceptable by the judges ...

The rules state - Movie length: Minimum of 1 minute ~ 5 minutes.
But I don't think Reallusion will care, you're using their software to create amazing animation. Surly being a minute or two over but producing high end work cannot go against you.

I'll mix traditional animation and motion clips, and make another video just about characters animations in IClone5
Thank you, and good luck everyone !

Do the characters in the clip have to be human? One of my options for this contest was to show two giant robots fighting.
Before I make a thread to enter this contest, do the characters have to be humans or could we do monsters or robot instead.
Yes, robots are fine to use for your submission. Giant fighting robots, especially!!!

If you are having any issues viewing content please message Polycount admin. Thx!
My two favourite sites are:

And FREE MUSIC (that is also really classy to pro-movie standard):
try Kevin Macleod's http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/
Any more suggestions please?
or can we discuss both in the same thread please?
