I tried in my concept connect the temple with industry and in the second embodiment, the old spacecraft plus ruins I hope I got it.

theme: Mine City,
architecture - old and new, and the new archtectuur humiliated old achtectuur. example: The old casteel is the foundation for the new buildings, which are disrespectfully built on the castle.
landscape - the new people are not only disrespectfully to the buildings but also disrespectful to the landscape. they make immense mines and quarries in search of minerals and gold and silver to drift trade
time - very early in the morning

Created an alternative version to this one.
- Lights have some glow, so they seem to be on, also added some lens effect.
- Fully orange colored walls have been changed (thank you guys. )
My concept is a big drilling complex, which has been customized to work as arena. I planned it to have the main area which has a bit of a scifi factory look and then a more rusted lower industrial area.

Theme 1
[Space Castles] My first theme "Melting Pot" is an over the top Space Castle. A cross between Peak and Facing Worlds were my main inspirations.
I knew that Epic had tackled oriental themes beforehand in UT3 but while that game went for hard gritty realism I swung hard into fantastical. I can't quite match up to the level of detail but I hope I conveyed the idea well enough.

The idea is an world where space castles are always falling from the sky(Would be awesome if someone could pull off space castles falling mid gameplay in far background for it) levels could have several castles smashed together.

New Age Industrial
I decided to use a block out of Deck to show how the theme can be applied to a number of levels. Deck 27 is a recently built magma refinery much like Deck 17.
I noticed in the older Unreal Tournaments there was a balance of themes that where generally cleaner and less war-torn and ones that are. This is something for the clean side of the spectrum. The idea is to have surfaces flow from complex to clean and smooth for a good rhythm. Deck was a good opportunity to explore this as in my opinion my favorite versions of the level was when there was high visibility and less clutter.

For this one I was looking at a lot of the skyscraper maps in past UTs and I was trying to come up with a theme that they likely would have done back in 99 if they had the right tech. A mall would be a perfect way to ground the this game and and give people a setting entry point. I found when I was younger I really enjoyed levels like the giant rooms and city mods on occasion as they felt personal and fantastic at the same time like when you imagine yourself as a super hero. Going from a megamall to a castle in space during a storm would surely put things in epic perspective. To make this different than a lot of modern shooters and keep in unreal I am making the mall more fantasy and not half destroyed like it would be in a military shooter.

[Ruins] "Balance"
Unfortunately trying to juggle many themes at once and spending about 80% of my time on my first concept I wasn't able to flesh out this image, I would have liked to spend more time on the idea as its own variation as a more grounded in realism Asian map instead of a space castle.

[Space] Outpost. A terraformed base of operations on a tiny planetoid or asteroid.

I would imagine the entire area would be changing "day and night" as the asteroid base spins dynamically. I would have liked to spend more time on this one as well but put most of my time into other concepts.
[Derelict Facility] "Gas Chamber" is a space dungeon, an old condemned mine where a perpetual gas leak at the very bottom slowly fills the area until it's evacuated out by an emergency fan. Tight corridors of light and dark contrasting areas of light would play on anxiety of the players.
Since I didn't have time to make extra shots of this, instead I'm submitting variations of the same shot with different levels of the GES bio gas filling the room and exiting the room.

[Derelict Facility] "Retrograde" Super-sized old militaristic like tech.
Iterating off of myself off of the mine after someone suggested I look at nuclear chimneys I wanted to do a full on variation of the mine but much higher up towards an exit. A mixture of wide open areas and tighter corridors into different parts of the building. I wanted to convey the fact you could enter an exit through broken down decayed huge tubing. I chose to use blue and red lights to give it a CTF vibe, both sides would clash in the middle area but might be able to take outskirt routes on the giant fan or through the tubes.

Here is my entry and interpretation for one of the levels in Unreal Tournament. This military base is located on a mountaintop, which is currently under attack with all sorts of destroyed spaceships nearby. Awesome competition and good luck to everybody!
