Anatomy Workshop

I've been meaning to get a much deeper understanding of anatomy for some time now. Its something I keep overlooking. So I've decided to create a skeleton model which I will build up with muscles groups and flesh. I may even do a male and female version. But to begin with I'm going to start on the Skull and facial muscles. Then I'll look more closely at the structures of the face (eyes, ears, mouth, nose, etc) with individual sculpting studies. After which I'll move on the the body.

I invite anyone wanting to improve their understanding of anatomy to JOIN IN. I also hope to build this thread into a onestop shop for anatomy research and reference. I'll be using ZBrush mostly but feel free to use any medium you like. I'd truly love to see someone break out some sculpey.

Critique and comments more than welcome. I hope some of the anatomy gurus knocking about on the forums will impart some of there knowledge here as well.

Any recommendations for research and reference are welcomed and I'll add them to the list below.

found this the other day, cool anatomy ref experiement in google chrome!

skull looks cool! kinda feel like with the level of detail it seems you're going for that the teeth aren't taking it far enough. They dont feel like things sucked up into sockets. looks cool though, cant wait to see more :)

Cheers guys. Hopefully I won't get bored with this. I probably won't be doing this intensively though. I'll still be doing other things as I do this so it'll be a slow process. Thanks for that link moose. Looks like great reference. Will check it out.

Update. Found that labelling the model really helped show parts that I have done incorrectly. So i'll tweak some things in the next update. (eg. The occipital bone at the back goes to high up the skull and the mandible needs a few more details.) I'm not too bothered about the underside of the skull and the interior of the nose and the orbits for now, as they dont effect muscle groups.

    Cool,

The shape of the eye sockets is a bit off. The bottom should have a slight angle instead of being 100% straight.

    Looking forward to your progress.

    Thanks guys.

@Psyk0. Yep. Your right. well spotted.

Small update. Lots of little tweaks including changing the eye sockets and broadening the nasal bone. Not really worth uploading the video. Also had a mess about with a skull material for fun.

Will be starting on the top part of the spine next.

    skullpart3.jpg

EDIT: does anyone know a good way to darken the cavities in the material. notice the spaces between the teeth and the sutures are quite bright. I played about with the cavity sliders and tried masking by cavity but it wasnt really working. Is it something in the lighting maybe?

I think you're being too timid with your shapes, they're a bit simplified and round. You're missing the bulged on the brow ridge and the zygomatic arch is a a pretty complex shape in reality, having several narrow and thick parts and curving in and out. Also, stick your finger in your mouth, feel how pronounced the ridges above and below the teeth are, especially the canines have huge bulges around them.

Thanks a lot. Definitely must know. For anyone more curious there are a bunch of videos from med schools of dissecting bodies (also a way to see it). Maybe in a while we will have an animal anatomy workshop too. ;D

Totally didn't see this awesome thread before I made my anatomy study thread, so, if it's cool, and this is what you meant by join in, I'd be more than happy to post my studies here, if it's not what you meant, it's all good dude, just let me know. :)
What you got so far Stinger is looking awesome, tiny thing I noticed, was the lower teeth seem to be a bit too much horizontal, in the ref shader provided looks like there is a curve there, other than that, it's looking really solid dude :) I think I need to start with a bones too, maybe I'm getting a little too far ahead of myself here.

Also, I was thinking of doing a dog sculpt, but for now, I've got a revised female from my other thread, and an arm I was working on today, any feedback is much appreciated! :)

Forearms are tricky, and for some reason I still can't get deltoids correct, but I got Bigjohn to help me with that stuff. Not sure if I got the forearm 100% on this one, but I'm really glad to hear it's helped :)

I reference Bridgman's anatomy, and a lot of the older masters like Michelangelo, Rembrandt, and Bronzino, I'll post some pics tomorrow :)

Bronzino knows his shit. Aside from the unnaturally long neck on the cupid, the anatomy in this painting is pretty awesome.
