Hi everyone!
For the past year the Knald team has been busy working on a new application that helps artists create great textures. We are proud to announce the open beta of Knald - The world's first GPU powered solution for generating "bake quality" textures from any 2D source texture.
Multi-vendor GPU Support!
By harnessing the power of OpenCL™, Knald is a cross hardware platform solution and therefore is not limited to any specific GPU vendor. (NVIDIA or AMD cards are currently supported) If your graphics card supports OpenCL™ then you are good to go!

How fast is ultra fast?
Knald can generate a Normal, Derivative, Displacement/Height, Ambient Occlusion, Concavity and Convexity maps in around 5 seconds on a mid level Nvidia 560Ti. When loading a Heightmap directly, all other maps are generated instantly and automatically.

Real-time?
Once you integrate your source texture, all the controls in Knald are real-time, meaning that you can iterate quickly and control the exact look & feel of your textures without waiting for your PC to bake and catch up with you.

What does Knald mean for artists?

We would love for you to try out Knald and hear what you think! You can download the open beta from HERE and find our tutorial video HERE. Please post any questions, feature requests, or bug reports you might have in this thread or on the open beta forums over at Eat3d
Enjoy!
Kind regards,
The Knald team.

What does Knald mean for artists?
- Versatile work flow – Artists can import and work with Normal, Derivative, Heightmaps and photo-sourced textures.
- All calculations & processing are performed in double/single precision floating point (float64/float32).
- Pixel perfect 8, 16 and 32bit support - Our file I/O and image processing pipeline preserves your high precision data.
- Best in class Heightmaps – Excellent quality, accurate height maps generated from a Normal/Derivative or photo-sourced texture.
- Best in class real-time AO – Extremely high quality and clean results rivaling baked AO at 600+ rays.
- Ultra fast results – Real time AO, Concavity and Convexity map generation adjustment means no more waiting for bakes.
- Simultaneous map processing – See and adjust the results of all maps instantly.
- Real time (scalable) tessellation in the 3D preview – See what your heightmap looks like before importing it into an engine.

Grats on the release man!
been using this for a while now, it's really very awesome! -
awesome andy
-
Congrats on the release, this looks really cool!
-
Looks very interesting!
-
Oooo! Looks hot! Out of curiosity, what kind of OpenCL support are you finding? Is it just a driver update even for older cards?
-
Really impressive so far. Blown away by how fast the textures are generated and the quality/tweakability is really incredible.
-
Awesome dude! Looking forward to trying it.
-
So this is the badboy program you and Lee have been sneeky sneeky chatty chatty about in the Hangouts
Awesome! trying it now! -
Oh, wow. This looks fantastic.
-
Awesome!!!

'error initializing openCL
Please make sure your graphics card supports OpenCL 1.1 or later' -
Woah, this looks like fun.
Downloading already. -
This is awesome so far man! Definitely going to be playing with this.
-
Siiick dude!
-
Awesome!
-
Thanks for the kind words guys!
@everyone, Please make sure you have the newest drivers for your GPU and then run Knald with full Admin privileges.
You can get the latest Nvidia drivers here and the latest AMD/ATI drivers heremonkeyscience wrote: »Oooo! Looks hot! Out of curiosity, what kind of OpenCL support are you finding? Is it just a driver update even for older cards?skankerzero wrote: »'error initializing openCL

What card are you using and which drivers do you have? Updating them might fix the issue you are having. Please try a clean driver install after uninstalling the driver and rebooting and see if that helps. -
Oh god! I already can feel the power of this thing unleashed on my school project! Thank you so much!
-
Congrats on the release Andy, awesome stuff
-
Niiiiice
-
wow- this is so easy to use- no problems at all. thank you for releasing this app
-
Congrats on the release! Can't wait to give it a shot.
-
awesome! congrats on the release. cant wait to start playing around with it.
-
mega dope!.. looks like fun. Congrats on your release
-
Features are killer, sure. But I love the design! It looks sooo clean and organized!
And I watched the turorial- very well done! -
The LP AO feature is awesome! Do you think there's any way you can have it support tesselation/heightmaps applied to the low poly too so you can get broader AO on smaller details (ie belts, large folds, etc) without having to use the high resolution geo? Would save a lot of time if the only thing you had to bake was the normal map :]
-
oh man this is great cant wait to try it out.. Thank you
-
I am so excited to try this! Thanks
-
Awesome have been playing around with it at lunchtime
Ill be using this to generate my cavity + convexity maps for sure!!
-
amazing news!

Looks very interesting, it won't let me download it though says my cart is empty after I fill in my information.
I have to keep drooling over the intro video for the time being then -

same here -
Great job guys, this seems great, I can't wait until all maps are generated in real time, I loathe rendering.
A few suggestions that may have been mentioned:
1. When using the file browser it defaults to the Knald folder. Can it remember the last folder you used so when working with multiple files I don't have to go hunting every time?
2. I couldn't get rectangular textures to work, are they supported?
3. Can there be a 'copy to clipboard' button for each of the maps? I would prefer to not export files and bloat a directory when I will just save them in my .psd file.
4. Can AO be baked from the tesselated low poly? If so that will give some great results.
Can't wait to see about integrating this into my workflow. -

There website doesn't work with chrome, I had to use firefox to download it. -
Did not work in internet explorer either, so firefox here I come for a minute or two
Thanks -

Hey guys,
First of all, I just want to say a huge thanks to everyone in the thread for posting such amazing comments!
I will respond to individuals tomorrow as it is getting late (5:45am), but the site should now work perfectly in IE, FF and Chrome. I just tested all 3 browsers and didnt see any issues.
We just fixed something that might have been causing a few issues with the people who were getting the "Empty cart" error, but everything should be working ok now.
If anyone does still have any issues with the site (or anything else for that matter), it would be great if you could post your browser version, OS and hardware specs. etc. you and we will look into it.
Thanks again everyone! -
I actually can't even run it on my Windows 8 machine:(
Edit: Works now. Odd. -
This looks awesome. I'm going to give it a go later at work.
-
Features looks awesome !
Downloaded the beta. I am also having the same issue slipgatecentral. -

It worked when I was using chrome, clear the cache maybe? Or perhaps I grabbed this before a problem arose (I got a copy much earlier, been fiddling with it a little)
Good program so far! And fair does it's pretty quick and the previewer works nicely! No extra fiddly bits on the previewer unless they're needed -
This looks fantastic, I have only done some quick early tests but it seems to out perform CrazyBump when you throw a dirty diffuse through it. The details seem a lot easier to control and get the results you want from basic diffuse data. All other map samples look to be using much better algorithms as well. I'm always skeptical when one of these applications pops up as they all typically swiftly disappoint. But after running some basic tests we might have a CrazyBump killer on our hands :P

interesting, definitely a great choice for doing curvature. just wish i could feed it normals and displacement at the same time and not have it generate one of those since it's not giving me optimal results if it's only using one. or at least i havent figured out how to do that
other than that - super fast and will hopefully create curvature without seams on baked models?only tried it on a tiling texture for now.
-
Great tool, congrats on releasing it! I'm glad I can now share my screen on hangouts while using it
-
ah so this is the super secret tool from the hangouts! Awesome can't wait to try it out
-
Awesome Work here guys!!! Definitely going to check it out.
-
Works great,I love it! Thanks for the great tool
-
Been testing this for a long time and I have to say. It's awesome! Everyone should download and use it.
-
Doesn't want to authenticate, possible issue with proxies / firewalls ?
