Self-Learning Path: Doing a bunch of small projects instead a huge one?

That idea came to me when I saw a fanart modeling of MO from Wall-E. Well, he looks deceptively simple, and definitely easier to model than modeling a Gundam or Evangelion. But for a beginner like me I think I can learn a ton from modeling that lil guy.

And so far no one told me about that.

In fact, it's same with learning 2D art: Do a whole bunch of small projects is more beneficial than doing a few huge projects. You will learn more. You won't burn out too fast. And you can have a lot of fun. Why didn't anyone tell me about this already?

Don't worry. I decided to work on a relatively simple one. Unfortunately I will be working non-stop for next few days. I will jump into the sketch/design phase around this Saturday.

So far this is what I came up with. A bit of a fanart for Wall-E. I like that little scrubber fella and decided to give him more details and stuff. I am pretty sure the level of complexity is pretty much in beginner level. And this is NOT the finalized design. I will have to do a lot of tweaking, especially with the proportions.

So I am thinking now. (I am at work now, actually.) I plan to start with the very rough proxy meshes and add the details as I go. The main goal of project is to get familiarized with the modeling, especially blocking out the shapes. And yes, the finalized model with be fully Sub-D, or freezed from the Sub-D meshes. I am not thinking about the UV and texture at this point, though.

Well, I won't post anything relevant to this UNTIL I finish the project. It would be embarrassing to announce the project, post the sketches, and can't finish it. XD

This should have the opposite effect and drive you to finish it AND improve through peer feedback. You're still procrastinating. Start your blockout! Post it in wips.

Like others said above, you should definitely post your progress. DON'T post only the finished project, it's a very bad idea, as repeatedly stated here .

I lived in South Korea for over two years (and can read your response in Korean). I studied Korean for almost two years and had the experience of learning the slang and colloquial while living there. I miss eating 깍두기 for sure.

Silly me, I just discovered (!) Edge Weight Tool in M odo, which is different from Vertex Weight Tool. Now I feel more comfortable modeling stuff.

I also learn on my own and I do a mix between big projects and and small ones. I mostly do small ones and focus on techniques like hard surface modeling or baking textures etc. I want to get those techniques down so I can go further in the pipeline. When you make a big project though (I did one big UE4 scene with lighting etc) you can learn alot aswell. there are so many things to learn while importing into game engines. And if you set yourself a time limit, you also learn to manage your time and to motivate yourself which are extremly important skills to I think. So for me its focusing on techniques with small proejcts and use them in big projects.
