Planning on learning substance designer and putting some examples in the portfolio. How relevant does polycount think this is and how many studios besides Ubisoft use substance designer and painter?

I would suggest learning it and if you scroll to the bottom of their page it shows a list of their customers.

Its becoming pretty popular, but is mostly a studio budget decision. A lot of larger studios will give the artist the option to choose their software of choice, and then supply licenses. Whatever will help speed up workflow, but do not use these tools as a crutch to avoid learning fundamentals. You will seriously hinder your efficiency when working outside of these tools when you do not have the luxury of a team that can provide a commercial license for your entire workflow of choice.

Like RaptorCWS said, learn it, it cant hurt IMO.

I can't be too specific unfortunately but at this point, pretty much every AAA studio has either a bunch of SD/SP licenses or at least a will to evaluate. Publisher wise, the biggest Substance users are Sony, Activision, Ubisoft and Capcom.
