3ds max 2012 - must click wireframe to select object?

I feel like I must have stumbled onto one of the landmine-like hotkeys Max has, like X killing gizmos.

In order to select an object, I must click where the wireframe is, even if I'm not in wireframe mode - if I click a flat polygon in the center of it, it will select nothing, and I must click the edge.

Since I obviously don't work in wireframe mode all the time, this is adding a lot of headaches.

Any idea as to how I fix this? the help documentation has a lot of stuff about selection tools but this is something I can't find in my preferences anywhere.

If anyone else ever has this question come up, it appears to be tied to Nitrous - with Nitrous turned on, clicking a face (that has no wire behind it, say the middle of a plane) will not select the object. With D3D as the display driver, it will. I have no idea why this causes this issue.

Can't reproduce this issue, It selects correctly,
in shaded /realistic / and other modes except wireframe(as its supposes to behave).

rare issue,(considering that you didn't get any answers either..)
maybe check your drivers, or anything non-3dsmax like plugins, etc.

Nitrous is also very incomplete anyway..

Did you install the service packs for Max?
