Is there any word if there will be a specific UDK for iPhone? This, alongside Carmack's work with the Rage demo is going to really raise the bar for iOS gaming.
This is about 100x more impressive than anything else I've seen on the iPhone yet, and I'd already been impressed by some of other games. How can you push the boundaries so much further! It's like, it's not even just 'a bit' better than some other graphically good iPhone games, it's massively better.
I'm with Mr. 22 - It's the most impressive bit of game tech I've seen on the iPhone. Sure, its a game engine and I shouldn't be this impressed, but I wasn't expecting it to look that good and at that resolution.
I'd be happy if I didn't have a 2nd Gen iPod touch... or Apple released hardware in a way that didn't lock people out from future developments. Lovely strategy though, just throw it away to upgrade.
I want/need to get an iPad, but rumors of another version are abound...
impressive, but I'm curious of a few things. How much of the resources are left in that demo for gameplay? What was up with the camera control? It felt like I was rotating a stick in 10 inches of mud when I tried to move around with the imaginary 'right thumbstick.'
Is that due to a capped frame rate or just wonky controls? It felt like it might have been locked around 15fps. I'm also curious what resolution it runs at, and if it runs at different resolutions on the 4 and 3gs (since they have different native/max screen resolutions).
I also wonder what resolution the textures were at, I dont have an iPhone (was playing the demo on a co-worker's) and I've been curious how different sizes look at the native size and resolution of the phone.

Definitely a difference in resolution. I have a 3gs and one of my coworkers has the 4, and there is a very noticeable difference.
Looks stunning on my iPad,very impressed. Are all of ue3 features available on the ios or is a stripped down version? The controls are pretty nice too. I just started ios development, and this is very exciting.
- Free tools. Epic’s Unreal Development Kit (UDK), available for free download at www.udk.com/download, ships with the same tools and technologies used to create “Epic Citadel.” Anyone can create games with UDK.
I dont know if thats just a way to promote Ued3/UDK, or them saying that we could have access to the mobile capabilities..but I really, really hope its the second one.
Very interesting, i wonder how Epic will deal with the actual deployment of an .app. At the moment its OSX only, as any .app developed, needs the provisioning files, certificates and the .app uploader all on a Mac.

Thats very interesting! Maybe apple finally opens up the iphone developement for PC/windows! I mean it looks like apple is really supporting epic here so there could be a good chance for it.
Tech looks amazing, they even cramped normal maps in it, i wonder how all these textures even fit in that ram and it looks quite a lot of polys too, would love to see some wireframe shots.

Same way it has been now: Make the app on PC (or Linux), and use the Mac to submit.
Obviously they did it because it's on the iThings.

I just got an email to preorder some new Ipads and new ipods. I laughed...This is seriously some nice stuff running on the iphone. Can't wait to see what comes out of this.
Thanks for the screen resolution info moose and gsokol; when I read that winPhone7 will support two screen resolutions on one device (primarily for better performance - low res for 3d games and higher res for 2d/less graphics intensive games) I was really curious if epic had decided to employ something similar to open up space for all the crazy stuff they're running.
So if they're pulling it all off at full resolution that's pretty gnarly...
I also didn't get a chance to get to the stone walkway leading to a castle that I saw in a youtube video, the person in the video just stared at the ground the whole time they walked up it, is there an ocean vista or anything similar there?

And I really wish Epic would do Unreal engine for Android, as I just ordered my Android phone today. Not gonna happen probably though
I'm downloading the app now...I can't wait to see how Ued looks in action. Thanks for the heads up on this!
Project sword looks badass too. This made my day
Epic Citadel was not installed on the iphone because it is not compatible with this iphone.. wtf

It looks incredible, so great. And runs smooth.
I really can't believe my eyes.
Requirements:Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch (3rd generation), and iPad. Requires iPhone OS 3.1.0 or later.
Shame no android version
*crosses fingers hoping there will someday be an editor for the general public to use*
UDK on OSX now please!
Edit: Can you share how many people worked on this? How long was development?

Very excited to see where this goes!
Man...that is freaking incredible!

I think this and the Rage Iphone demo I saw were the most impressive things, graphically, I've seen on the Iphone platform.

it also runs at 3 resolutions for the 3 devices, 1024x768 (ipad), 960x640 (iphone4), and 320x240 (3gs)

I don't lol, they tend to get stuck in the corner of the screen
