"Despite a message on the band's official web site that seems to suggest otherwise, TYPE O NEGATIVE frontman Peter Steele HAS NOT DIED."
That was back in 2005 when the death rumor went around from a joke they started on the website.
This seems to be real. Josh Silver confirmed it to blabbermouth.net.
Such a loss...I know Pete had substance abuse issues, but had hoped that was behind him. The metal and rock world lost a hugely talented and influential frontman and songwriter. No one sounded like Type O when they first came out. Bloody Kisses alone probably inspired hundreds and hundreds of bands. Been a huge fan of Type O from around the time October Rust came out, but I never got a chance to see them live or meet Pete. I had always been told that he was a really cool and funny guy and incredibly nice to the fans, despite never smiling in pictures.
Shit! One of my more favorite bands, and I never got a chance to see them live. Hell of a voice on that man. I think this is the first time I've been really upset about a celebrity dying. I was really hoping it wasn't true, no one else could ever take his place in Type O.

Yeah I usually check blabbermouth first thing in the morning for the latest metal news and kept hoping a report was going to show up that it was a bad rumor or something. Last time I really was as upset about a celebrity dying was when Dimebag Darrell was murdered. Steele and Type O were just as important and influential I think. He was young too, only 48.
