Happened to me yesterday with Win 7 Ultimate 64, I assumed it was bad drivers/software and did a fresh format/install before I'd seen the news article. Not knowing it was the update, the same thing happened after the fresh install.
I just did another fresh install and disabled auto-update during installation and this seems to have worked.
c22: yah, I think your stuff is related to Xnormal or a driver issue with your video card (was reading your post in tech talk). This only affected XP machines, not Vista or Win7.
For the record, I just comfirmed all this on a laptop I am currently fixing for a family member. Do not update XP with these updates until a fix is out.

As weird as this sounds, I thinkt it's related to the latest XNormal.
I've got a post up in Tech Talk so check that if anyone is having problems.

"The cause is not the update itself, but an existing infection. So far, reports suggest that this problem affects Windows XP and Windows Vista."
