Ok, I searched the manual and found mention of this feature but it turned out to be outdated and it is pointing to a button that doesn't exist anymore in my version (3ds Max 2012). I asked on AREA but got nowhere. Anyone know how to do this?

I basically want to have control over which objects are affected by the viewport rendering modes, it's kinda confusing to have so many unrelated wires in my wireframe view.

I'm affraid you can't specify a rendering mode per object.
    But you can :

-Display the Edged Faces only on the current selection.
Configure viewport>Visual Style>Display selected with edged faces.

-ONLY with DirectX and not poorly implemented Nitrous. Assign objects to a layer. In the object properties, under Display properties, press the "by Object" button so it switches to "By layer". Now in your Layer properties, in the listbox "display" you can chose a rendering mode.

Thanks Noors, I guess I could use Isolate selection (Alt+Q) for the wireframe.
