BRAINSYNCH Head Bust

Hey all, it's been a long time since I posted any work. I've been working on this bust on and off for the past few months and I plan to print it by end of the year. I'm looking at something that's around 6 to 8 inches tall so it's going to be pretty chunky.

Still left with a lot of work on this guy, the basic design is there and I probably need a few more passes to finesse it some more. I also have to make sure i don't go random detail all over and balance the surface contrast on this one (thanks pior)

nice sculpt, very controlled and a good balance between high frequency detail and low. I'd love to hear an explanation of your design choices. Why exposed brain? How did the creature evolve to have a skull where his brain doesn't fit? How does he hear? These questions make me believe he is some assembled creature cyborg or grown in a test tube because the head anatomy isn't natural to me.

Tadao- I understand what you mean. I did my best to distribute the detail so that there would be some "breaks" in all the detail. When it's printed, I doubt the detail is going to stand out much though. We'll see.

coots7- Thanks for the kind words and I'm glad you're rocking SC2. I wished I had the courage to play more on ladder :P. Exposed brain because of Takeya's work. He's human deep down with alien tissue/carapace mutating on him. Umm so yeah..brains for ears because I think it's cool! ha

Funny thing, looking at the first image of your latest post, the first image of the pose, his facial expression actually makes him look symphatic. Looking at the the others, he has a bit of a grunky look.

So I should receive the 4 inch test print in a week or so. I'm doing this test to check the forms of the bust before committing to a 6-7 inch print. Hopefully I don't have to rework too much of it. As for material finish, i'm thinking of going a neutral grey tone with a slight glossy finish (like wax?). I might have to do the glossy finish on my end though, we'll see. Once again, thanks for all the kind words.

Ferg- no plans on painting him, I'd rather spend the time sculpting new stuff. It would be great to see him painted though and would be cooler to see different takes on him from different artists. I'm not exactly handy with a paintbrush/airbrush either :P

Hey all, I finally got this bust printed. Here are some pics, the bust is a little over 4 inches tall.

There's a shot of it in my hand too to give you guys a sense of how big this thing is. I have fairly long fingers and the bust feels like a nice size, I lost quite a bit of detail due to the size and might consider printing a larger one to capture more of the details in my original zbrush sculpt.

ysalex- i had this printed at Ownage.com. I don't know if it's cool with them if I start quoting prices online but I'd say that their prices are reasonable. As for considerations, i'd say make sure your bust is water tight and balances well. Also stay away from really thin meshes. Lastly, it helps to plan ahead.. like knowing what size your final print is going to be and balancing out how much detail you put on it.

TeriyakiStyle- Probably would. Not sure about sculpting on it, i think it should be fine since the whole bust is made of resin.

darbeenbo- yeah, even if it didn't capture as much detail as I wanted. It still feels pretty damn good to hold it in your hands. I have it on my desk to remind myself to keep up with my personal works (doesn't always work. LOL)

Castings are in! Really pleased with how they turned out.
