Exporting ''complex'' objects.

Hey, i want to know how you export a complex object like a tank or a helicopter to an engine, what do you do with the small details like screw, you have to bake it first then combine to export? 

And how much would be a considerable good amount of tris for a mesh like that to be exported to a game engine?

Im not thinking about make a game, just think that know things like that can help me avoid problems in the future
