Started working on a second one. I'm deeming it Dead Pulse for now but not sure. I'm looking for Alien inspiration on this one so I referenced a lot of H.R. Giger.




Started in PS but didn't care for the direction. So I split it up and dynameshed the pieces in zBrush so I'm gong to try sculpting a bit of it.

Looks epic dude, maybe make the dustcover (the top part) like a spine and ribs attached to it or something. i see you used teeth on the magazine so adding a bit more bones wouldnt be out of place.

@EmkaStudios Thanks! Yeah unfortunately, I can't use a custom normal map so I'll have to ensure all the more that the AO keeps the detail and form.

It's pretty sick work, but I am having a hard time imagining the baking for flat texture for in-game view, hopefuly it will keep the character throughout the process.

@K_A_S_I Yeah that's what I am hoping. I have a couple techniques to generate a couple extra maps to compliment the AO so I am banking on those keeping more of the detail.

So I have been doing some reference on Alien and I feel like some parts of my gun are more strictly Giger than Alien. I've been debating taking some of the parts and dynameshing them together to make them feel like they are inside skin. What do you guys think?

Whatever you do keep in mind the borders of what can be done with skins. If you belive that burning/baking will give you this much depth with no drawbacks on regular in-game angles, go for it, but I am usually skeptic about those... But then again I do not work with 3D, so I am not the one to say whats viable and whats not. :P

@K_A_S_I I understand where you're coming from. I'm not entirely sure how it will work out but I figured hey what the heck I'll try it to see if it will work . If not,  maybe I'll use the high poly model to build my own crazy looking gun for my own purposes

This is looking pretty outrageous My version is pretty conservative. But having gone this route before i'd advise u to do a testbake at an earlier stage to give you an estimate of how this will transfer to ingame. Apart from that the highpoly is looking fantastic. I'd love to see it finished under all circumstances Keep it up!

Making some more progress. I did a test bake on the ammo clip and it seemed to work alright for the most part. The front of the clip is in a location with overlapping pieces in the UVs so we'll see what can be done there.

Well, the mainproblem I have is on the magazine. I did basically all my work on PS, starting witht he default skin and the UV-Sheet as guide. The thing is that the frontpart of the magazine (the long small side pointing towards the tip of the gun) seems to be located on the same locations where other parts are? oO On my UV-sheet its basically on the right lower corner. I had some blue stripes there for smaller parts (the barrel for example) of the weapon, but it also got applied on the magazine... So I had to kinda blacken it out, otherwise I would have had really ugly stripes on the mag...
I can't fix it. You can't notice it really as long as you dont know it, but the thing is, I now can't design that part of the magazine

This is a known issue with the Ak-47, and as far as I know it's unfixable.. just ignore that part of the ak-47 since it shares uv's, this part is never visible in-game so it doesn't matter how that looks. You are talking about this part on the ak right?

@SidMachinery Like @Endritv said, you kind of have to gloss over that part of the texture because it is overlapping other pieces. Since it's facing away from the player, you shouldn't see it anyway when holding the rifle so you should be alright.

Making some more progress here. Got the high poly done and then baked it. The bake went pretty well. The butt of the stock is a bit off but it is what it is I guess. Still working on the texture.

@M4tt Thanks. I took their AK-47 model and split the pieces out. Then I took them into ZBrush and dynameshed them. As I was modeling, I would take parts back and forth between ZBrush and Max. I baked it all in xNormal. Aaaand then I generated a couple of tertiary maps in CrazyBump. And now I'm working on it in Photoshop

Stock feels flat and is draging it as a whole a bit down, but overall its super sick, the front grip is immensly good. You might want to lower some of the phong boost, so the dark-deep areas do not flatten under lighting.

I was making skins for over a year and it's the first time I even hear about something like this. In workbench on the left size in the pannel you set everything yourself, starting from finish type through all phongs and later for patina and gunsmith exclusive phong boost. The .txt is generated for your skin once you click "save" and it will have all the settings you set in the panel in workbench.

But please don't take my word as an absolute truth, I could be wrong!

@K_A_S_I I don't know if you have to. Just reading through all of the documentation, they had example texts and then different tutorials I found online used them. Not all used them though. But I'm new to cs skins so I am assuming it's a jumping off point.

The more I look at this, the more I think I need to switch that metal back to more of a gray than that tan-ish color.

Try to use a gunsmith finish in case you are unsure on the colour.
It allows you to change the colour based on wear. I'd stick with the tan though or would even add a little more colour.
it is supposed to be a red skin after all!
But that is probably just personal preference.
