[Mudbox] retopo, oh the woes

Hy folks, for a project in class we have to use Mudbox. But I'm getting entirely frustrated, the retopo tools don't seem to work and more than often it just gives up and crashes, Mudbox also seems to be using way to much juice if you ask me when using Grab tools;

That's only half of my frustrations but the other things are software limitation because I'm a spoiled Zbrush user :'D

ok fine lets use the curves ,slider on 0.50 like the tutorial said

saved as FBX, import for a clean scene, it SOMETIMES works but I got holes, so I did a symetry fix, since then its gone to the pooper. All I'm getting is ...

I have no idea what's going on, or what I'm doing wrong. I'm not allowed to sculpt in Zbrush for this assignment ,its driving me up the walls. Is this program just highly incompetent or is this on my end ?

    if you have to use mud, you have to do it the mudbox way... mud is extremly picky about topo and uvs... 

    mud is also not for design sculpting... its more a detailing software... without a good base its hard to get something out of mud...

    if i had to do a sculpt in mud only my workflow would be...

    rough scetch...
    autoretopo...
    blocking more detail...
    autoretopo....
    cleanup in maya...
    detail sculpt...
