Are polygon quads, tris or vertices counts?
+ If we have access to render all of those polys now, woudn't it be better to use that power to render real time reflections with models from the last generation poly count?
I really don't think more polys per character are really necessary at this point, even last generation, they were enough
depends on the character design, really. just look at horizon, we're not talking about a mostly nude bald fighter from some boxing game. layers of cloth, jewelry, hair, fur. all that adds up. In the end it comes down to the design of a character and how close you will get. Last gen a lot of things needed to be baked on and be rigid, now we have a little more freedom. But it's time to switch to subd/displace workflows to maintain more detail. At one point it will be just super inefficient to have all those polygons in one model and someone needs to rig the stuff.

If you build a 20k mesh that need 20 materials, it will probably cost more than a 100k mesh with a single material using atlases.
Also - The games listed that are console only are running on engines that are extremely optimized specifically for the console they are developed for so they may be able to push higher poly counts than an engine that is multi-platform.
Just for clarification, a character from final fantasy listed is 100,000 polygons, which means 200k triangles right? Sorry for the question, it just seems there might be some confusion whether the stats meant tris or polys, remember one poly is made up of 2 tris.
Triangles = 3 sides. Quadrilateral = 4 sides. N-Gon = Infinite sides.
Because game engines almost always use triangles, assume that number is constant.
So 100,000 polygons are assumed to be 100,000 Triangles you see in a game.
