well for the barrel i really didn't think it would be that necessary, and i was going to for the container but i thought it looked pretty decent as it was, but I'll make a hi poly now i suppose
It's worth it. I used to think the same thing but the difference between vert smoothing and a normal map on the surface of that barrel will be night and day.

You should be baking from a high, bevelling edges, and creating something that looks current gen. These look like action quake 2 props.
Go look up some hard surface tutorials....
Finally, look at racer445s texturing tutorial, it will show you a good start for defining materials using textures
