Hi,

I'm slowly getting into game art, and something that has always boggled my mind is expansive environments. I was wondering if anyone has insight, or can direct me to a tutorial/article that discusses how to build outdoor levels. What are the tricks to creating boundaries and horizons for a level that should give the impression of being vast and open?

thanks for reading,
Josh

It's a really broad subject, if you could post some example of what expansive environments you're looking at, people could help you better.

In the mean-time, I suggest looking at Naught Dog's White Papers for their Uncharted series, they pretty much modeled everything non-scenic in Maya and arranged them nicely in the engine.

In most other engines will be the same, save for some custom Terrain tools used to elevate the planes.

Ya, I realized it might be a little broad, I'm just getting started with all this so I'm not even 100% sure what I'm asking. In the mean time I'll check out the Naughty Dog white papers.

    Thanks for replying,
