I would suggest going to school for 3D modeling if this is what you really want, but In my experience no one is "born with the gift" or "naturally talented" its all just practice practice practice

Practice, practice, practice! Use a larger brush than you think you should. I know myself and a lot of people I see starting out use real tiny brushes. Work large to medium to small!

Go find books by Andrew Loomis, Burne Hogarth, Glenn Vilppu (Whom you already know about) or George Bridgman and practice, practice, practice. Some of the books can be incredibly cheap, and others not so much.
