Is it an instance, in a referenced scene? I ran into a few issues recently where it wouldn't render multiple instances if they were referenced in. That was in Maya 2008 though, not sure if that issue has been addressed or not.
there's also an undo bug in 2008 that seems to discard the undo list randomly when doing animation related stuff. someone on the autodesk support site mentioned there would be a fix for this in a couple of weeks.
In max 2008+ you have to hit ResetUVWs every time you unwrap a new chan, or else it just copies the previous channel into that channel. As utterly stupid as it is, it was apparently a requested "feature".
